house temp?

What temperature does everyone usually keep their house on? Just curious because my future MIL says anything higher than 68 is too hot and makes bacteria grow! Say what? Lol my parents keep theirs on 71 or 72 and I checked MIL's and it was 60.... Brrrrr! We keep ours on 70 in the colder months.

So what does everyone keep their thermostat on?

Re: house temp?

  • We keep upstairs on 68 because oil heat is EXPENSIVE and we don't spen a lot of time up there unless we're sleeping in which case, we like it a little cooler anyway.

Downstairs is gas heat and is set at 71.

  • 72 is warm to keep your house, IMO. Our condo faces east? the direction of the sun in the afternoons and gets so warm that we don't need our heat on most of the time. It's pretty brutal in the summer though and end up running the a/c a ton because of it. I think our house is about 68-70 naturally.

Doesn't afternoon sun come from the west?

Ours is 66 but we use infrared space heaters on both floors set at 6870. The house heater is oil and like PP said way expensive. We use it as back up if the other heaters can't keep up.

  • Between 68-70. The nursery is generally the coldest room in the house so use a space heater (set to 68, DS sleeps swaddled) in there.

  • 66 when we're awake and 64 or less when we're sleeping. Oil aint cheap where we live! I would DIE of heat if it was 70+. We actually keep our heat at 58 when we're not home.

  • I know we're outlyers, but we keep our house at 75 pretty much year round.  We live in Georgia, so heat isn't super expensive since it's not as cold outside.  I run cold, and DH likes to wear jeans and a tee year round at home.  No problems with bacteria overgrowth or sickness though!

  • Thanks ladies! She thinks I am nuts for keeping it on 70. But then again she always thinks the way she does anything and everything is the way everyone should do it.

  • Since I have been home for the last 4 months, about 70. I pushed it up an few times and down a few times. When we are not home during the day, like 66. L's room is so cold, we have a space heater in there set to 73. It still feels cold sometimes. Putting her in the corner room was the worst decision I made.
