Little guy isn't gaining weight

We went for his 2 week appointment and get him circed. Well, he gained an ounce. In two weeks, he only gained an ounce. Doc has us supplementing and trying to up my supply. I kind of get the feeling that this may be the beginning of the end. Meh, he needs to gain weight.

Re: Little guy isn't gaining weight

  • He got full once. It will happen again.

Don't worry about it too much.  It might affect your supply negatively.

  • Gained an ounce from birth weight or an ounce from discharge weight?  Because an ounce from birth weight isn't all that bad depending on how much he lost!  At any rate, I understand because my oldest gained 12 ounces over the course of her first two months.... when I finally gave up and started formula.

  • I would just nurse every two hours to raise my supply and get him gaining.

He was born at 8 pounds 3 ounces, left at 7 pounds 8 ounces. Today he was 7 pounds 9 ounces. He has only gained an ounce.

  • Gained an ounce from what? Birth weight or discharge weight? Most pedis just want to see them back to birth weight by 2 weeks. So, if you're saying he's one ounce above birth weight I don't see the problem. Either way, if you want bfing to work I'd be hesitant to just start supplementing without first getting to the root of the bf issue, if there is in fact an issue. My first step would be to contact a LC and see about doing a weighed feeding. Good luck.

  • It doesn't have to be the beginning of the end (if you don't want it to be, that is). Combo feeding is always an option!

DS was a really slow gainer. I used to pump after I fed him and use that to supplement him at the next feeding. Anyway, part of it was just his way (he is still in the 15th percentile and eats more than me some days), and part of it was that I never really had a 100% supply, probably like 80%. So, he was nursed most of the time and generally took 1 bottle of formula a day starting around 5 months.

Either way, I know it's super stressful. Those first few weeks can be excruciating.

  • We had to supplement with an oz of formula/express bm for a couple weeks after nursing. Her weight started to come up dramatically. They cut us back to 1/2 oz 2 weeks ago of just express breast milk and her weight is still gaining.

The first 3 weeks or so was rough though. She was born at 6lbs 4 oz.. dropped to 5lbs 10oz. After 2 weeks, I think she was only at 5lbs 11oz or something. I can't remember exactly. But once we started supplementing it went up dramatically.

I think it was really just giving her time for her milk to come in. Pumping often and feeding often seemed to have helped that.

  • You should give yourself more time. If he is gaining you are going in the right direction. I agree that a lactation consultant is a good idea, and also if there are any local breastfeeding support groups, they are great. GL!

  • I had the same issue with DD--at her one month appointment she was only up 3oz from her birthweight.  Pedi had me supplement with formula, which I did for a week, then I pumped and gave her a bottle. She was BF until a year (pumped the last 3 mos) with one formula bottle a day.  Long story short is that she is a super slow gainer, even to this day-keep doing what you are doing, watch the baby--not the numbers--for now.  I know its so tough, don't give up if it isn't something you want to keep doing....good luck!

  • I had BF with both kids and had to supplement with formula for both and it was fine for us.  They both switched easily back and forth from breast to bottle

  • Ds didn't get back to birthweight until he was a month old.  I did supplement with EBM at two weeks, and although it was a pain in the rear to be pumping and nursing every two hours around the clock, he did start to gain.  Don't feel bad if you need to supplement.  My LC said that the more weight he gained, the stronger his suck would be, the more my supply would up.  It was a cycle that we just need to get into...and truly, he gained weight, his suck was stronger, etc. Maybe your little guy is just getting into the weight gaining process.  It can be stressful and frustrating as a mom, but try not to worry,

  • I don't have any advice since I've never been there, but I hope Cade starts gaining soon!

  • This may sound like ridiculous advice but was he weighed on the same scale?  My pedi has 2 scales.  At DS first appointment which ended up being when he was about 2 weeks old he weighed 6 pounds exactly.  He was born at 6 pounds 14 ounces.  3 days later on the other scale at the office he was 7 pounds 8 ounces.  I really find it hard to believe he gained a pound and a half in 3 days.

Yup, same scale and same nurse. They use the same room for all well baby visits. Since it has all the baby goods in it.

Ah.  I don't have a lot of help in the form of breastfeeding and uping your supply, but yeah, I've been there.  It sucks.

  • FWIW, DD was 9lbs 2oz at birth, left the hospital at something like 8-7, and was like 8-9 at her two week.  She nursed for 9ish months, 6 months exclusively.  It doesn't necessarily mean the beginning of the end.  I hope it gets better for you.
