Cilantro haters enter

See?  We aren't crazy.

"We found that people with the AA genotype atrs7107418 had higher odds of perceiving a soapy taste in cilantro and higher odds of disliking the herb compared to those with the AG genotype."

Re: Cilantro haters enter

  • I HATE cilantro. I mean, hate it with a passion. If there is even a hint of it in anything I eat, I can sniff it out immediately. This is it exactly, it just tastes like soap to me.

    I knew I wasn't alone.

  • That is so weird. My H complains about cilantro, and I absolutely did not understand his complaint. I guess it is genetic?!

Yep, I can taste one little leaf in a whole meal if it somehow sneaks in.

  • I didn't know people tasted it as soap... I think I'll stop adding it to company dishes. People can top with it if they choose.

I can handle it in small doses and I do think how fresh it is does make a difference.

But really, I won't order a dish at a restaurant if it has it.  I will if I know that it's just sprinkled on top and they can just leave it off, but i try not to change dishes by having them remove it.

Exactly. One little leaf and I know its there... mocking me and my hatred.

  • I hate cilantro!

  • I probably hate cilantro but I don't think I have ever tried it. I am such a fussy eater that I don't like many things.

I have the super taster gene. No I haven't been tested.

I can handle it in VERY small doses. Like, there is so much avocado or tomatillo or whatever, that it's barely there.

My husband loves it, and since he does the grocery shopping, buys it (we eat a lot of Mexican food). So I'll chop some and add it to his portion. And even just doing that, my hands smell and I'm disgusted. That must be true love.

  • Yuck yuck yuck. Cilantro has to be one of the worst herbs ever. I dare you to come up with a worse one.
  • I've always thought cilantro was nasty. I didn't know I shared my dislike with so many people! Cilantro haters rule!

  • The smell stands out to me.

This one time when H lived with roommates and we were all cooking a meal.  Well the one recipe called for a bunch of parsley and they asked me to get it for them.  I went into the fridge and all I could smell was the rank stench of cilantro.

They didn't even buy parsley and they could barely tell.

Thank god I saved that dish from impending doom.

Hester, this is not a competition.  It's serious genetic sh!t.

  • Cilantro lovers need to step it up here. I will order a dish at a resturant specifically because there is cilantro in it!

  • When I was 10 my mom remarried a man who was a professional chef. He just loved to throw cilantro in most of his dishes; it was the first time I had tasted it. I thought it tasted disgusting and would refuse to eat anything he made. This infuriated my mom, I got sent to my room during dinner often. To this day, I don't have a very good relationship with my mom or stepdad.

This is my story of how cilantro has ruined my life.

  • Haterz gonna hate me when I get in line at Chipotle and I hold it up asking for plain white rice. They keep it secretly hidden in the back, but I can't stand cilantro in my rice (or anywhere for that matter).

    OMG.  That is really traumatic.

    Haha I will!

In full disclosure, there are plenty of other reasons why we don't have a good relationship. You know, alcoholism, mental health issues, the usual suspects.

But I like to think it was the cilantro that sent us over the edge.

So, does ginger taste like soap to you guys, too? Because it tastes just like soap to me. Until this thread, I thought that was the point - to cleanse the palate, ala soap taste. lol
