I had a sh*t day (afternoon actually)

I am in some weird pissing contest with a colleague of mine but in reality he is the only real player. I am really busy with my stuff and don't have time for his antics but he takes swipes at me every chance he gets. He has taken 2 swipes at me today alone and one of them doesn't even make sense for the lab. Actually, what he is proposing is against the lab's best interest because we have already been busted on several occasions. I think what he is proposing is just to try to go against me so he can win his imaginary power war. It has gotten to the point where I can't trust him and have to calculate everything I do. For example, I am taking a potential $5K per year pay cut to ensure I can maintain my longevity in my position I created for myself.

Normally, I can just shrug it off but it has really gotten to me today. He has publicly demeaned me twice today alone to make himself look better! I just don't understand why he is doing this. To make matters worse I could potentially help him in his situation but any suggestions I offer he just blows off. I am not competing with him in any way so I have no idea why he is trying to compete in an imaginary competition with me.

Anyway, I just needed to vent. To whomever has read this...Thanks! Smile

ETA: I guess that I just have enough other stuff going on that I really don't need this guy's crap too. I just can't handle it today. And, what makes it even sadder is that we used to be friends. Sad

I'm so sorry that you are having to deal with this man's bs. I'm sure that you can't go to anyone to talk about this, since it will look like you are being a whiner. I guess that all you can do is hope that karma comes quick to kick his ass.

However, watch out, if his antics are starting to effect your health, maybe you should reevaluate things. For instance, is there another university that you could relocate to?

Thanks Chunstad! Yeah I really do not want to sound like a whiner but it is just getting insane and making me very paranoid too. I just really needed to get it off my chest.

I am considering a move but right now I am stuck for another 1.5 years. He may be out of work this summer so I think he is trying to jockey for position. This may be a non-issue come the fall. Thanks again for reading my rant!

Thanks everyone! I am sure today will go better than yesterday. I guess if you are in an field where there are a lot of egos there is bound to be some major drama. The 2 guys in my lab are pretty patriarchal too so the women in our lab are always having butt up against that. Thanks for the support ladies!

I am wondering the same thing. I haven't responded to the email yet. I want to go into his office and kick him in the groin but I don't think that is an option.

This whole stink is about getting rid of extra chemicals that haven't been used in probably close to a decade. We keep getting nailed by the State because we can not seem to maintain the database they require because there is just too many chemicals to keep track of. I suggested we get rid of everything we don't use. It has now turned into a war for some ungodly reason and the reality is that we are at risk of getting fined if we can not get this under control in the lab.

DH told me that I should just email him back and tell him that I won't worry about getting rid of the chemicals until September 1st! If the guy can't find funding by then he will be out of a job in August so that is why my first sentence would be such a burn! Stick out tongue

Exactly why does that always have to be a battle. The manager of my thesis lab (a man I would classify as a hoarder) and I had many fights about chemical disposal. I had this crazy idea that anything purchased before I was born should probably get thrown out.

It is amazing what some quiet time in a swimming pool can do to unwind someone and re-center one's mind! Although I have received some very good responses here, all of which I wanted to use, I have decided to not do or say anything right now.

This isn't the first issue I have had with this co-worker so that is why I was so upset and couldn't just let it go. There have been numerous issues, some of which I have documented already, and they seem to be escalating in frequency. There isn't any one that is terribly horrible in itself but collectively it is setting a patter of harassment.

I decided that I would be better off building up my file then letting my co-worker know that if it doesn't stop I will file a harassment complaint with the University. I think the threat along with the evidence would get him to stop his antics permanently.

Thanks again ladies for all of your support. there are many days I don't know what I would do if I couldn't vent or get ideas on this board!
