Lenin, is one of the reasons why WWII started, its almost as bad as naming your kid Hitler
He died 15 years before WWII began but I will assume that most people, like yourself are unsure about his politics. He is not comparable to Hitler but that is besides the point.
I prefer the way Lenin looks but I am tempted to use the Lennon spelling because of what people may believe about Lenin.
But I think it is always a little weird to use surnames as first names if you aren't using it because it has special meaning for you, either as a family name or after a particular person, which is clearly the case if you don't even know how you want to spell it.

True. I just like the way the name sounds. I don't have a great liking for John Lennon or Vladimir Lenin.

I think if you name your child either, you will get a lifetime of "Oh, Beatles fan, huh?". Then he will get a lifetime of "So your parents must have loved John Lennon!". Just food for thought.
Here's Nymbler's suggestions if you put in Lennon:

What are you talking about?? I guess History is not your forte. :headdesk:
To answer your question, I prefer Lennon It was a named we loved but did not like the nickname Lenny. We are huge Beatles fans though. Plus I do not pronounce the two the same way.

I agree with this. If you don't have a particular fondness of John Lennon, you may want to reconsider. You and your child are going to hear about it for his entire life.
But if you are set on the name, definitely the Lennon spelling is the way to go.

So here's my issue - I actually don't have a problem with Lenin as communist, there are some fabulous communists out there. However, he was a bit of a despot and that would be a big issue for me.
I always make this remark in dealing with the name (and I'm a HUGE Beatles fan). No matter how you spell it, Lennon and Lenin sound alike. As much of a Beatles fan as I am, we are getting farther and farther removed from the band itself and it isn't as likely that as children your child's contemporaries will know the actual band member's names. However, there is a 100% chance (regardless of the current knowledge of this board) that your child will study Lenin in some world history class in school. And then his friends will all wonder why his parents named him after a dictator. (well maybe not his friends Pol Pot and Castro, but the others will)

Lennon, I like

Well now I feel lame for not knowing this!

neither is my style, but I agree with this.
It's like choosing between a rock star and a dictator.
Lennon.
1. Looks nice on paper.
2. John Lennon is a Beatle -- reason enough! J/k
3. Lenin is a communist. No thanks!
Yep. John Lennon is an icon. Go with that.

When I read Lenin, I read it as lean in
