Hospital Recommendations

Hi all-looking for recommendation on hospital to deliver!  We are due in June and are starting to look around.  I am currently at Fairview Riverside-LOVE my OB but am not as amped up about delivering there just from what I have heard from others-some good, some not so good.  If they could promise she is who would deliver me, I would stick there.

We live in NE Minneapolis so are pretty central to both Minneapolis and St. Paul.  Not sure as far as birth plan yet; not planning on an epidural but am planning to make the final call once I am in labor (who knows how it will go!).

So far-touring Fairview, Abbott and maybe St. Joe's.

Re: Hospital Recommendations

  • I recently delivered at Regions and really liked it. The labor and delivery floor was amazing with a great staff and really large, newly remodeled rooms. You then transfer to the nursery floor, which I didn't mind. The room was nice and pretty large still. The staff wasnt as great, but still very nice and helpful. I will for sure deliver there again, I really have nothing bad to say about it!

  • I delivered at Fairview Riverside in April.  I used the riverside womens clinic midwife group and was pleased with them.  I ended up needing a vacuum extraction so there was an OB that ended up actually delivering my LO. I was please with her as well.

As far as the hospital stay itself, I guess I don't have anything to compare it to as this was my first, but I thought it was fine. I work at Riverside, so I was familiar with the campus and facility. I had an epidural about 8hrs into my labor because my contractions were pretty unbearable. I didn't really have a birthplan either, but I didn't really feel pressured to do anything - I kind of left things up to my midwife - had them suggest things as I progressed and made decisions together.  As far as postpartum, I was in one of the bigger rooms, so we had plenty of room and no complaints about the room.  I had pretty good nurses, and only 1 not so good nurse.

  • I delivered at riverside last week and can't say enough fabulous things about my experience there! I have never experienced such kindness from all of the nurses, doctors, staff, etc. I really didn't expect the level of care and support I received and was so thankful!

  • I recently posted something about this here:

I've delivered at St. John's and regions and far preferred St. John's. if I had it to do again I'd go to st joe's, but I'm a vbac and couldn't deliverer there. My 2nd choice after st joes would be St. John's.

I delivered at Abbott and had a wonderful experience. Plus, the new Women&Child Center will be open by the time you deliver, which is supposed to be amazing.

This. The new facility will be wonderful. I am sad that I'm delivering just a bit too early to make it in.

  • Maple Grove Hospital. It was amazing and we plan on having our second there, whenever that may be! :)  That is largely the focus of that hospital (beside an emergency room) so their Center is huge and very modern!! Absolutely loved it.

  • I delivered both my girls at St. Johns and LOVED the staff, they were WONDERFUL!!!  The rooms are newly remodeled and very nice.  I will definitely deliver our next there, if we choose to have a 3rd.

  • Hey hon good luck!! I had my daughter at the Woodwinds Hospital. They are extremely family oriented and extremely anal about security. I had a csection, and recovered in much less time than I did with my son. When i had my daughter, the nurses assigned to my daughter were in the operating room, and completed everything for her while they stiched me up, so my hubby and i were able to bond with her immediately after. They then handed her to me, and wheeled me back up to my assigned room. They did everything in the room except for another test, but my dad followed the nurse who had him and she didn't mind one bit. The beds including visitor bed are really nice. If you want to be immediately hands on and have your little one with you the entire time this is place.
  • I delivered at St.John's and would highly recommend it! They are wonderful! The maternity ward is fabulous and the nurses are great! Individual rooms with plenty of space. I was going to try and do it as naturally as possibly, but ended up getting an epidural...it was amazing (don't feel bad if you end up getting one). The anesthesiologist was fabulous. :)

  • I will be delivering at Abbott/Children's in the new Mother Baby Center. We just had a tour of the new facility yesterday and oh my gosh it's amazing! The rooms are HUGE with large bathrooms, a tub with a movable shower head, a large TV and an actual pullout couch/bed for the dad to sleep on. One room has a huge birthing tub and they have portable ones if you decide to go that route. They also have a nice waiting area, snack bars and a play room for kids.

Plus the crisis nursery is located there so if (and hopefully none of you will) have to have your baby there after delivery you are right there with them.

We have been seeing a midwife and plan on working with them at the hospital.
