Special Needs

Private OT question

DS went for a follow-up with his developmental pediatrician yesterday and received a provisional dx of SPD as the doctor feels sensory issues peak at age 3 and that he may "outgrow" some of his hypersensitivity.  DS also has a gross motor delay--doctor feels significant and was surprised he didn't qualify for the school district's SN preschool.  So she gave me a Rx for private OT, stating that an OT can also tackle the gross motor.

If anyone has gone this route, are there any questions I should ask when contacting a pediatric OT? I am trying to remain "in network" so it will be a lot of cold calling. I want to be sure the OT understands my DS needs someone who understands sensory needs.

And I guess I am finally going to purchase "The Out of Sync Child." I'm not sure why I haven't before now.

Re: Private OT question

  • This is us, too. We have private OT outside of school.

You can call in and mention it to the office but you are only speaking to the receptionist or administration assistant.

You can bring up concerns you have that you think are sensory at your first appointment when they evaluate your DS. All OT's are trained to understand sensory issues, feeding issues, and some pt.

You will have to see if the OT is a good fit for your DS. If it is, you can ask for activities to do at home or any concerning questions at each therapy session.

  • Thanks for the info. I appreciate it.

Hopefully I won't have any issues with our health insurance, but I'm not holding my breath.

  • I'd ask around for rec's on good therapists in your area first. Just like anything, some OT's are going to be better around sensory stuff, others will be better in other areas (feeding, grasping, handwiriting) etc so see if you can find some leads first.

Your first appt is going to be an intro/evaluation anyway.  So, when you call just tell the receptionist you'd like to make an appointment for an OT evaluation and that you'd like a therapist who can focus on or specializes in sensory issues.
