So what's the real story with caffeine?

I'm am struggling giving up my morning coffee.  I've cut it down to one cup in the morning, and I thought that was okay.  But now I am reading all kinds of things from 1 cup is okay, and you should have none at all!  What about caffeine-free coffee and soda?  Does anyone have any advice or guidance from their doctor?

Re: So what's the real story with caffeine?

  • I've heard one or two cups a day is okay. I'm been addicted to sprite and been having coffee aversions that's how I've delt with it. Of course I suffer the headaches once in a while too....

  • I still drink coffee. My OB said 200300 mg of coffee is just fine. So you don't need to give up your morning cup.

I actually switched to half caff so I can have two and sometimes three cups a day. I did the same with my last pg and had no issues.

ETA : 200 to 300. I hate that I can't use dashes or parentheses when bumping from my phone!

  • My doc says up to 150mg of caffeine a day is the limit. I drink one cherry coke zero each day, and it only has 35mg in it.

  • I still drink a cup of coffee on weekends in the morning. Last time OB said a cup a day was fine. I have cut back though because I used to have coffee in the morning at work but now it's just once or twice on the weekends.

  • I have not given up my morning coffee either.  I don't make it very strong but I have 1-2 every morning.  I did with my last as well and had no problems.  This is the ONLY caffeine I have in a day so I feel I am okay.

  • If I need to have caffeine or if there is nothing else available to drink, then I have iced tea, which doesn't have much caffeine in it, but still has some. I have had iced tea with all 3 pregnancies. I also drink caffeine-free diet coke every once in awhile too.

  • My doc is on the super conservative side, no caffeine, no decaf.  Fertility clinics. The reasoning being that some caffeine can be harmful and with decaf they use chemicals to remove the caffeine.  I've always been on the side of moderation personally where a cup or won't hurt but I'm following doctor's orders. :-(

  • I am not a coffee drinker but I heard one glass was okay. Also my SIL drank half caffeinated coffe!?! Does that make sense? Do they make that or did she make it on her own, I don't know? You could try brewing with one scoop caffeine and one scoop decaf!?

    This.

I will allow myself 1-2 a day...more on special occasions or when I'm working on a project.

  • My guidance was to keep it under 200 mg of caffeine per day. I only drink one cappuccino in the morning and the coffee shop I frequent has 75 mg of caffeine in one espresso so that's fine. Also, that leaves me free to have an afternoon cup of tea if I decide I want one (also 75 mg). I say, ask your Doc and do what works for you :)
  • I love you ladies... thanks for all the advice!  I feel so much better. :)

  • I have personally opted to give it up entirely. After two miscarriages, I'm not taking any chances. My 1-2 cups a day (and a cup is 8 oz, not a grande from Starbucks) is fine!

i had a super old school doc with my daughter, he told me the most important thing is to listen to your body, if you want to drink a cup of coffee, or eat a hot dog, or dye your hair, then do it, the key is moderation and listening to your body, if you do something and you feels sick, stop doing it or dont do it again.  i didnt really cut out anything with my daughter and shes just fine :)  (obviously besides the dont drink or do drugs thing!! lol).... all sorts of sites/docs/people will tell you a million things, most importantly listen to your body, it speaks very loudly :)

  • I drink half-caff, one small cup 1st thing in the AM then another on the ride to work. The rest of the day I drink ~10 cups of water. I did the same with DS.

  • What I've read is that you should limit it, not that you have to completely avoid it.  The amount varies depending on the source, though.  The absolute highest I've seen is 300mg of caffeine per day.  Here's a link that shows you how much caffeine is in a lot of products.

    https://www.babycenter.com/caffeine-during-pregnancy?page=2

Coffee is generally worse than tea or soda.  Chocolate can actually have a surprising amount of caffeine (at my prenatal class last time the nurse told us we could have 7 cans of Coke or 40g of chocolate in a day).

  • Thanks for posting b/c I was thinking the same thing. I usually won't drink it when I am home in the mornings but when I have to be at work early I usually get a grande from Starbucks...

  • I've just cut down, still drinking about a 12oz cup of coffee a day. I like my coffee a little weaker though, I fill my cup with about 2/3 coffee and top it off with hot water.
Hoping this one stays put a little longer

  • I am done with the caffeine drinks. I have switched my coffee to decaf. However, I will allow myself to have green tea every once in awhile.

I cut out caffeine with my DD. My thought is, caffeine is addicting to an adult, so why wouldn't be addicting for a baby.

    Coffee doesn't cause autism.

Yes  There is absolutely no research to suggest that caffeine/coffee causes autism. You did not do that to him.

  • My OB also says 200 mg. I would sooner cut someone, than completely cut out caffeine. Haha

  • It's a personal choice, but I choose not to drink caffeine throughout my pregnancy.  I didn't like coffee until after my first kid was born, and now I miss it's helpfulness in my regularity.

But all in moderation, and I think most docs are okay with 1 cup of Joe a day.
