How and I Supposed to Put on a Nice Suit?!?!

I am being sworn in to the New York Bar next week and I need to be in a suit for it.  Right now I work for a judge and I am able to get away with the one pair of dress pants that still fit me being paired with a jacket which doesn't match and is way too small but gets me through the days I am in court.  When I am not in court I wear a giant pair of maternity khakis with one of the giant maternity sweaters my cousin sent me from her pregnancy.  However, these get ups won't fly next week at my swearing in...I am supposed to be in a nice suit.  I was squeezing into my pre-pregnancy suits until 2 weeks ago with a bella band, but that isn't going to happen, plus I look like 10 pounds of shi!t in a 5 pound bag when I do it.  Anyone have any creative ideas?

Re: How and I Supposed to Put on a Nice Suit?!?!

  • Well since you have one pair of dress pants that fit...maybe buy a new jacket and nice maternity blouse to wear under it?  You could buy a jacket a size up or just wear it unbuttoned. I'm sure as long as you look professional they won't care if your jacket is buttoned.

  • I had a suggestion but then realized it was wildly inappropriate considering you will be a sworn in and a fully fledged lawyer. Also, we aren't in middle school/high school anymore either. However, now i'm amused by the idea. Go to motherhood or another maternity store and buy a suit, wear it to the swearing in ceremony while the tags are tucked in and then take it back for a refund.

    I'm horrible. I know  :)

Sorry I dont have a real suggestion for you.

No help...just about died laughing when I read this part though. I'm sure you look beautiful.  Better start shopping for maternity suit that fits?

  • I would try a maternity consignment place to find a jacket that fits to go with the pants you already have... or buy one on super sale.  I feel for you, as I also have to dress up for work and I only have one pair of pants that fit!

  • I would check ebay, you could probably save a bunch there, otherwise id say buy a nice black dress and pair it with a blazer or cardigan? I'm not sure if a dress is appropriate or not but it might get the job done for the day and Liz Lange at Target has some really awesome dresses that are affordable.

This is exactly what I would I suggest.

  • There are several maternity rental sites online that allow you to rent maternity clothes for like half the price of buying.  I am not sure how long it takes to get things etc but you might check it out.  The one with the best reviews is this.

  • A dress and a blazer would be my suggestion. Dresses are super comfortable and you can probably find one that's conservative enough for work (with a jacket) but cute enough for dinners out, etc. The brand Maternal America has nice things and you can often find discounts online. They have a herringbone dress and blazer IIRC that's super cute.

Also, I know you won't wear the new outfit much this pregnancy, but you may have another baby one day? It's not like navy pant suits or black shift dresses go out of style...

  • I think wearing a dress and a blazer is fine. I did wear a suit when I was sworn in to the NY bar back in 2006, but I am pretty sure that not everyone wore a suit. As long as you are dressed appropriately and not wearing jeans, I think you will be fine. A dress and a blazer or even a dress and a cardigan is more than fine. Trust me no one will judge you being 9 months pregnant. Congrats on getting admitted!
  • I feel your pain.  My law firm is taking photos on Monday and we were all told to wear suits (sure, I love getting my professional photo taken at 38wks pregnant).  I'm just going to wear a black jersey dress and they can live with it or use an older photo of me.
