amoxicillin = rash and diarrhea?

DS has been on amoxicillin for a couple days due to an ear infection.  He's had diarrhea and a TERRIBLE rash.  I plan to call the nurse tomorrow, but just wondering if you've had the same experience?  Also, the rash isn't going away like normal with our go-to cream, actually seems to be getting worse!...is there something special you've tried that gets rid of this rash that comes from amoxicillin?

 Thanks!

  • Same here on my toddler . I think it's a yeast rash we have an appt tomorrow. Try letting him go diaper less for a little bit to air out also probiotics ask doc thought not sure for an infant

  • If your LO eats yogurt stock up on it and feed it as often as he will take it. If not you can use a probiotic like culturelle. They make a packet you mix with milk or formula and give. Give the probiotic apart from the antibiotic. Make sure to change LO more often as he most likely has diarrhea.

  • Definitely call the doctor. I don't want to scare you but, my son had an allergic reaction to amoxicillin when he was a baby and he cannot be prescribed any penicillin or the reaction could be worse or fatal the next time.  His face broke out in a rash that got worse by the 2nd or 3rd day.

  • Also, to ease the rash you can try plain oatmeal and put the oats in a thin hose or sock, tie it off and run water over it your baby's bath. Baby can play with it and it's less worrisome then colloidal oatmeal.

  • If the rash is an allergic reaction caused by the medicine then no topical ointment is going to get rid of it. This is coming from my physician husband. This could be a potentially serious reaction to the penicillin drug family so call your doctor ASAP!
  • Diarrhea and diaper rash are common size effects of amoxicillin...the constant diarrhea can be very irritating.  We would do lots of diaper free time, and spray off her bottom with water vs wiping.  Per the nurse line we used Lotrimin which can help if it is a yeast rash.  Also, probiotics during this time.  We gave lots of greek yogurt.

  • Ditto on the Lotrimin, worked wonders for us.

    This. I'm surprised your dr didn't tell you when they prescribed it.

  • My son had the same reaction, but unfortunately it changed his system when the whole deal started and now we can't use commercial wipes, he cannot have oatmeal (which he was eating lots of before the amox), now we are finding out he can't have barley, I can't use the face and hand wipes because he breaks out....it seriously messed up my son. I battled a severe yeast infection for about 2 months, nothing took care of it until I went back to just formula and viva paper towel with water. Sounds stupid but it cleared up in a matter of days.

  • Same thing, my pedi recomended pro-biotics in his bottles to ease the diarhea and nystatin for the yeast rash, he was all better in just a few days.

    This.  The way we get a yeast infection when taking antibiotics, it's the same thing for the babies.   DD#1 had a yeast rash for most of the first 2 years of her life.  Lotrimin AF is the way to go.

  • thanks everyone!  We did go to the doctor today and they talked about doing the yogurt or probiotic, and, perscribed a cream for his bum.  His ear infection hasn't cleared, so he's starting a new antiobiotic, so we definately have to do some of this for the next few days!!
