need advice re: sickness

Both of my DD's have been sick for weeks. DD1 has a cough, and DD2 has a runny nose, cough and ear infection. I took them to the pedi, and he gave DD2 antibiotics and told me to use a nebulizer with albuterol for both. I'm giving the antibiotics, but I'm a little hesitant to use the albuterol since it's such a strong drug.

I've tried every natural remedy that they will tolerate, but nothing is working. I use humidifiers, saline, honey, lemon juice, supplements, probiotics, etc.

I'm concerned about the coughs turning into pnemonia. DD2's cough keeps her up every night. Should I go ahead and use the nebulizer?

  • I think there's a point where you give in to the medication if you've exhausted all other approaches.

Maybe just start with using the nebulizer before bed to help her sleep. Then go from there?

  • I agree, I am all for natural remedies when you can, but when it gets serious enough to be prescribed a nebulizer I think you need to go ahead and use it.  It really works wonders.  I hope your LO feels better soon!

  • I would use it this time, but next time they start getting sick, eliminate all dairy and sugar. Dairy produces mucus and sugar weakens the immune system. What kind of honey are you using? Raw local honey works best. I also give a teaspoon of elderberry concentrate daily for immune support. You can purchase it on vitacost.com. Ginger (steeped in hot water) with lemon is also another great immune system booster. Have you tried essential oils? Look into young living or do terra (thieves blend or on guard). If you can't get essential oils, matys natural vapor rub (can purchase at walgreens) works great for coughs. Put a little on the feet and cover with socks. I've also heard that the wet sock treatment works great too. I think the best way that these home remedies work is if you start at the onset of illness. Okay, that was a bunch of info thrown at you, but I hope it helps.
