No naps after 6-7pm??

LO usually naps 2-3 times per day for about 1 to 2 1/2 hours each. Yesterday he only took two 45 minute naps and he was so cranky but wouldn't sleep! Finally at 7:45pm I was nursing him, he fell asleep and I wondered if he was just going to be down for the night or wake up. I debated even letting him sleep since he usually goes down so much later when he takes such late naps... well he woke up 45 minutes later and then I tried to get the cranky, overtired kid to sleep again for almost 4 more hours! It was midnight by the time he was finally down. Then he woke up every 2 hours the whole night. I haven't had such a rough night in several weeks!

I'm going back to work in a week and I pray to God that this sh!t doesn't continue. Do any of you guys not let your LOs nap after a certain time?  Or was this just a fluke? I still don't really have a "bedtime" for him yet since it doesn't seem like any nighttime routines help. I have just been kinda letting him go to bed once he finally falls asleep which is usually between 9-11pm. Maybe I should try a routine again now that he's a little older.. Thoughts?

  • I am not sure! Our "routine" for DD involve 3 naps during the day (one around 9am for 1 hourish, one around 1pm for 2 - 2.5 hours, and one around 5 for 1 hour).  I have really been trying to make her stay up from 6 to 9 pm, which is when her last nursing is.  She goes from 9 until 5 or 6am with no feedings.

This. I don't schedule her naps per say, it just happens to fall around these times, roughly.

I do purposefully keep her awake from 6ish until bedtime. Bath starts at 8:30/8:45 every night. She'll sleep from 9:00/9:30 until 5-8am, no MOTN feedings.

  • I went back to work on the sixth, but we are still mostly following a baby led routine. My LO usually has a nap in the evening she is mostly a cat napper during the day from around 6730. Then she has a bath, eats and is starting to go back to sleep between 930 1030 for her long stretch of sleep. I don't mind the evening nap as it will eventually start to merge with her nighttime sleep she will end up with a 7 730 bedtime.

  • N naps on the way home from daycare from 515 to 545, then is up until 7 when we start bedtine routine. She is asleep by 730 for the night save for a few random nights where she is up until 8.

  • My DD has a nap in the am, around lunch and usually late afternoon. She takes a power nap from 7-730 every night then is up. We do bath bottle bed at 8 and she sleeps from 9-5 after that. Someday she probably will stop the power nap but until it affects her sleep schedule I'm not going to stop it.

Forgot to mention. I pick her up from daycare at 5:30 and she is usually waking up from her afternoon nap then. Her daily naps are typically about 45-60 min.

  • Around 3 or 4 months, bedtime should move early (between 6 PM and 8 PM) per Weissbluth and pretty much every sleep book I've read. We follow this, and WHEN he naps well, his last nap is at 4:30 PM (but naps have been a mess lately!).

  • We are still letting him take a late nap.  I tried to get rid of it and make an early bed time but he went from going to 6 hours stretch to up every 3 hours.  So after a few nights we switched back.  I will try again in a couple rooms.

  • L set his own schedule. He goes down for the night between 6:30 and 7:30 pm depending on when he finished his last cap nap and how much he has slept already for the day. Usually he is up two hours from his last 30 minute nap, but will go to sleep faster if he's underslept. With a few exceptional nights, like where he slept too long or not enough during the day, he's been doing this since 8 weeks old and he is 12 weeks now. I wish he went to bed later since he is still waking up a few times a night, but I assume 7 pm will just become his natural bedtime.

We start bed at 7. He usually wakes from his last nap between 5 and 5:30.

    Exactly this.

  • she usually takes 2 longer naps and then a short nap for about 30 minutes from about 530-6.  We start bed at 7ish
  • We have no schedule. Bedtime is normally anywhere from 7-9pm. Sometimes she will take a nap and sleep past 6. I usually let her so I can have a peaceful dinner, but will try to do a lot of energetic play to tire her for bed. She usually doesn't have a problem.
