Growing pains in 3 yo

About once every few months, my son wakes up crying and says his knees hurt. I assume this is growing pains and give ibuprofen. 

Is there anything else I should or could be doing?

    My little girl is doing the same thing, except a bit more frequently. I give her a cool damp cloth as well while the pain relief kicks in.

    My understanding is that it's just a stage.

    I posted about this a little while ago and someone suggested that they use "medicine" that is just lotion that they rub onto little ones legs, rather than giving pain relief. I intend to try this next time DD wakes.
