LO choked on broccoli last night

Last night LO was "eating" steamed broccoli which she's done before and loved and had no issues.   Well last night she suddenly started choking, couldn't breath and I had to sweep all of the food out of her mouth with my finger.  (It wasn't a gag, it was definitely a choke)  Essentially, she was nibbling off little pieces of broccoli and storing it in her  mouth and not swallowing so at some point it all just kinda mushed together at the back of her mouth and blocked her airway but was too much to swallow.  I think we'll go back to more mushy foods for a while- scariest moment of my life.

  • That must have been scary. Glad she is okay!

  • LO is a chipmunk too. She likes to store her food in her cheeks. We just watch her closely while she eats and if we see her try to pack in too much we pull it away until she has swallowed what's in her mouth. Sometimes I give her some water to wash it down, and then give the food back.

  • I've taken baby cpr etc. and it's funny, I still go right for the back pat when DD is coughing. I know it's the wrong thing to do, but in the moment, instinct takes over! Glad your LO is ok! They love to jam tons of food in those little mouths. :-)

You aren't supposed to sweep the mouth, though, b/c you can actually shove the food further back.

This!  Consider taking an infant CPR class.

DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
