NPR: Bizarre phone call?

Hi ladies, just wondering if this is normal and I'm just being crazy. So I get a phone call from "Portamedic" from a gentleman who I could barely understand (he was mumbling) saying he needed to schedule my physical exam to be done at my home. He had all my info (name, phone number, address) and I'm assuming he was calling due to the life insurance policy I had applied for through my husbands work although he couldn't really verify that (??) is it normal to have someone come to your home for a physical exam for life insurance? He said it was blood pressure, weight and questions...why can't I just go to my doctor?

  • This would definitely freak me out! Is there a way your dh can verify this through is HR department?

  • I just had this happen.  Though they were able to confirm it was for the life insurance I had just applied for.  I was also given the option to go their office, have it at my office, or at home.   I chose to go to their office.  I had to give blood, pee in a cup, be weighed and they checked my pulse and blood pressure.   I would ask if they have an office, if you are uncomfortable.

  • I'm pretty sure my husband has life insurance and he had to go to a doctor that they selected. Nobody came to our house. I would call the company that holds the policy and ask if it is legit.

  • Yep, we had someone come to do just that. They are a 3rd party contractor hired by the insurance company.
  • For my last 2 companies if you got life insurance that was 5x your salary or more, the insurance company sent someone to the house to weigh you, take a urine sample, take your vitals, and do a health questionnaire. Always they sent a same gender medic.

For spouses however,  the insurance was a lot less coverage and no exam was required. I would call the insurance company directly and verify who they are sending.

Yup, my parents have had it done at their home several times.

  • When I got disability insurance they came to my home and did height/weight/blood/urine, but it would be nice if the guy could explain why he was calling!!

  • Thanks ladies, good to know it isn't totally off the wall. Something ab the convo seemed very off but it could have been this particular guys attitude. I asked to go to an office but the closest ones are in NYC and thats an hour long train ride. I wish they had approved doctors in my area. He said he was sending a guy named Tom over Tuesday at noon...I was like um no? So I told him I would call back. I'm going to call the insurance company and verify them and then call back and schedule with a woman and my husband works crazy hours so I'll just ask my mom or sister to come over during the exam.

  • I work for an insurance company and our agents do use Portamedic for medical exams along with other medical facilities. I can tell you that it is not uncommon for the examiner to come to your home for the exam. I see this done all the time.

We had the option of having someone come to our house or going to a medical office. I didn't feel comfortable having someone come here for some reason, so we went to the office nearby. I would probably just confirm with a supervisor that everything is legit, but then again I tend to be overly skeptical of everything and anything.
This. We opted to go the their office.
