Talk me off the ledge

I'm hoping today's meltdown in the car was just because of other reasons, but overall, Nora has been a nightmare in a car since she was a newborn.  I did everything I could to keep her happy while traveling, and so far, my only success has been allowing her to watch Elmo in the car.  I said I wouldn't put a screen in front of her, but alas, I have a very difficult traveler.

Today was like a horrible Vietnam flashback of her colic days in the car, and it really stressed me the eff out to think she's going to continue this behavior.

I believe RF is important, very important, but I don't know how long I can take her screaming in the car.  I've ensure her comfort, I've given her a stuffed animal to comfort her, I let her watch Elmo, whatever possible to make her happy.  Please tell me there is somthing I can do instead of trying out FF? Because I really don't want to do it, but I need help if this behavior becomes a trend again.

  • I don't have any suggestions, but there's no guarantee that she wouldn't be doing the same thing FFing. =/

  • I have no advice.  I just wanted to say I'm sorry and good luck!!

I agree. It might make matters worse because she can see you and will want your attention directed at her and not the road. I would let her watch Elmo a thousand times over before ff at this age.

  • I have no advice only sympathy. I have a child that hates the car and I'm hoping one day it will magically be better.

  • Im so sorry you're having such a rough time in the car. She's not crying because she's rear facing. Turning her around probably won't help at all, and isn't worth the risks anyway. I know using a screen in the car isn't ideal, but if it helps the situation I say keep it up. A little screen time isn't the end of the world if it helps keep mom and baby safe and sane.

This. Gator is a peach in the car but occasionally she has a phase where she hates the car. She has been FF during two long road trips. One she did fine, the other she screamed and freaked out for 9 hours there and 9 hours back.

  • Thanks for the pep talk, ladies.  I'm not glad I'm not the only one, because it's not a fun experience.  I won't turn her around until she's maxed out, I promise.  I am just a little on edge after all the screaming we went through her first few months of life.  She's an awesome baby at home, but she sucks for travel.  I think my mom told me once I was the same.

We may be living the same life.  I honestly thought the car would be better now...it's not, just different.  From the minute A sees the car she starts yelling NO NO NO...awesome.  I have gotten to the point that I just do what I need to do.  I have the Fisher Price iPhone thing and let her play with the apps the entire ride. It's the only thing that will keep her from screaming.   Go with Elmo, it the whole scheme of things, it's not that bad.  And it makes it a safer ride for all.
