Babies: 0 - 3 Months

changing question

I'm a ftm, so was hoping to get your opinions, but thankfully, we have a very happy baby.  He rarely cries and fusses, however, no matter what mood he is in he always screams bloody murder when we change him.  Is this normal? We change him as fast as possible and we don't do anything out of the ordinary, he just seems to hate something about being changed.  Is it just something they need to get used to or should I be worried at all?  Thanks in advance, sorry for the crazy question.

Re: changing question

  • DS screamed during diaper changes for the first 2 or 3 weeks of his life.  Now, he enjoys getting his diaper changed and he loves his changing pad.

  • Maybe he's just getting cold. Try using a thin blanket just on his stomach, or maybe the changing pad is cold, try to warm it before you put him on it. Mine did it for a few days until I started putting a thin blanket folded a few times then place it on his stomach.
  • My DS hates them too. Our Dr says its normal.

  • Agree w/PPs.  I think all newborns hate being changed (they hate having their clothes removed and exposed).  DS screamed bloody murder every single time; he eventually grew out of it after several weeks.

Same here.  Our 6 week old still screams bloody murder for every diaper change and bath.  Our doc says that some babies just really don't like being naked.  (At least maybe he's modest!)  Hahaa!  I figure he'll grow out of it at some point.  I have found that doing a diaper change on a full stomach is a more pleasant experience for him.

  • I would just try different things-

    warm your wipes

put a mobile over the changing table? distract him!

    good luck.

  • My son hates it too and screams the house down every time. I'm hoping he grows out of it soon.

  • My DS was like that for the first 2 or 3 weeks, too. Now he smiles and sometimes giggles when I lay him on the changing pad or start undoing his clothes and diaper. He loves being naked.

Yep, this. My LO hated them at first, but has since started to look forward to them! He LOVES them now (we sing songs after we're done, and I think he just likes being able to see my face really well).

This. LO hated having her diaper changed for awhile (I don't remember how old she was when she stopped), but now at 9 weeks, she LOVES having it changed, especially if I leave it off awhile and she can wiggle around.

  • Thanks so much for all of the advice, hopefully he will grow out of it soon.  I will try some of your pps.  Thanks again.

nope, DS never cried during diaper changes. But yes OP  it's normal and I'm just it's just a phase!

  • Oh yes. I close the door for noise containment.

Some things that seem to help marginally are doing it on a full stomach, using cloth wipes moistened with warm water, and using a crotch-snapping onesie and having him wear babylegs under it to minimize how naked he has to get.

I hope he grows out of it, because I had been looking forward to part-time ECing, and I can't do it if he's going to be mad about getting bare-bottomed!
