Parenting after a Loss

XP: Sleep deprivation vent

XP from Babies 0-3 months

DD is still very little, not quite 3 weeks...so I realize this is likely "normal" and will "get better soon" but DD will NOT go to sleep at night. We have a PnP for her in our room and she refuses to sleep in it 85% of the time. I spend a lot of the night holding her. Last night she fussed and cried through a lot of the night too, even though I changed her, fed her, swaddled her, offered the pacifier, gave her some gas drops, etc.  It is such a hopeless feeling when 3am rolls around and you have a screaming, wide-awake newborn in your hands... she did fall asleep finally around 6am after I fed her and DH left for work. She slept until 9:50 which felt miraculous. I am so tired and I can't even think straight and I never feel like I will sleep at night again.  I feel like a routine will never be established. I know I'm hoping for too much too soon...but these have been a loooong three weeks!

Just wanted to vent, thanks for listening!

Re: XP: Sleep deprivation vent

  • ((Hugs)) Sleep deprivation is one of the biggest mindf*cks of the postpartum period, IMO.  I was pretty looney from lack of sleep in the first few weeks of my DS' life, compounded with recovery from my csxn. It is a 24 hour production for a while, that's for sure.

I can only assure you that what you've got going on is not abnormal, and it will pass to some extent, and at some point.  Your LO doesn't know day from night, and while she will get it eventually, it can be a rocky road to get there. We had luck getting DS to calm (he was not a good sleeper generally, much less at 3 weeks) with dimming lights, keeping things calm, and playing soft music after say 7or 8.  Was he still up screaming at 3?  Yes, but he had quiet periods in between and they eventually led to periods of sleep in between (2 hours or so) that I got used to.  And those periods eventually got longer, too.

Good luck and know you are not alone!

  • What you are experiencing is completely normal. I know it's hard, but it will pass...and it will feel amazing when you manage to get five hours of sleep in a night.

  • It really does get better... Like Sandyd mentioned, keep things really mellow at night. Quiet music, we listen to a lot of the Pandora lullaby station :] also, keep things bright and noisier during the day when you want LO awake. HTH! And remember, it will change. They grow way to fast!

  • I don't know what the future holds for our los but I can tell you I'm right there with you. My little girl sleeps great during the day even in her pnp or swing but at night she just screams any time we try to put her down. Right now the only way we can get any sleep is if we let her sleep in our arms in bed. It makes me very nervous and I'm worried that the longer we let it go on the harder it'll be to break her of it but after spending several hours each night soothing her to sleep only to have her start screaming minutes after being set down we give in and just lay in bed with her.
  • I am right there with you (he is 3 weeks on Sat). I sleep when he sleeps during the day and have been guilty of putting him in is siwng in our bedroom at night fos some relief - I am not worried at all about it starting a bad habit at this point. It won't last forver and I have just resigned myself to being awake all hours of the night. I hope you get some sleep soon! It can make you crazy - it has literally made me almost blind, I can't see anymore I am so tired...

  • I also wanted to add that though I don't miss the sleep deprivation you guys are in the midst of, I can't believe the little 6lb squish that I had at that age is now a 24lb toddling machine.  Soak in those middle of the night snuggles with your itty bitty, before you know it s/he will be too busy to sit that still.
