are gliders necessary?

are they? we weren't going to buy one, and don't *really* have a budget for one unless I can find one used.

Re: are gliders necessary?

  • I would find a used one if you could.  I didn't have one with my first two kids but a friend gave me one for my third.  Once I had one I wondered why I didn't buy one with the first two.  It is good for rocking LO to sleep.  With the first two I just walked around the house holding them to get them to sleep.  It took forever and it was exhausting!  Try Once Upon A Child - I have seen them there.

  • The only things that are necessary are car seat, some clothes, diapers, and a place for baby to sleep. The rest are extras that are nice. We got a floor model, closeout glider. I know that it'll be very nice to have for feedings, especially with the footstool. But I can just as easily feed DD on the couch.

  • I don't think that they are necessary. I think that it's just a personal preference thing. Some people really like them and others don't. I love my recliner, so no glider for us!

  • I never bought one with my first or with this baby. But when dd was little and we were living with my ILs at the time my mil had a nice rocking chair that I used. I'm looking for one but if I can't find one on cl or in my budget then ill just pass on it like I did last time.

Have you checked cl or thrift stores?

  • Not necessary, but very useful in my opinion. I got one for this DS for $25 from Craigs List...the one for DS 1 was $10 from Craigs List.

  • Not necessary - but GREAT nonetheless....Craigslist.  Target had one on clearance this week for $80.

If you can muster up the cash, I say it would be money well spent.

  • I agree with others- not a necessity by any means, but ours got a ton of use.  I still use it with DS when we read books.  He settles down quick in it.  Actually, I was just thinking about whether or not I needed a 2nd because I think he's going to be all bummed when it moves out of his room (reality is that he's just going to have to suck it up because I'm not really gonna buy another).

This. I just fed the girls on the couch or in bed.

  • I didn't use my daughter's much until she was about 8 months old, up until that point I was feeling like it was a huge waste of money. Since then I've used it a ton! My daughter is 22 months old and we still rock all of the time, I love it. I'm thinking I will probably just end up getting a new one for this baby so that I can still rock my first "baby" in her room.

  • Nope. We always just fed Ds on the couch.

  • I would be looking at CL or something similar.  I don't know how I would have gotten through the infant days without one.  Even now at almost 4 and 2-1/2 both of my kids like to be rocked when they don't feel good.  Maybe it was soothing to me too...that's why I felt it was necessary.
  • We bought one off CraigsList for $75 and it's definitely been worth it.  I used it multiple times a night when DD would wake to eat.  I also use it now as part of our bedtime routine.  When she's older we'll continue to use it for reading.

  • Certainly far from a necessity but man is it a luxury. We splurged on an upholstered version that looks like an actual chair; it still gets used daily. If you can find one that's affordable I'm sure you'll appreciate it... but I also think you could easily survive without one.

  • Didn't have one last time and survived. This time we bought a recliner. I'm excited to have it and I'm glad it's something we will use for years, not just in a nursery.

  • we would have D.I.E.D. without our recliner/rocker for DS... I mean DIED... he had sooooooo many issues sleeping and BF it wasn't even funny... rocking helped put him to sleep and kept my brain off the pain of the BF experience that we had....

we still use it to put him to sleep and I am definitely glad we have one... that being said, if money is tight I would find a used one somewhere

Same with me. DS is over 2 1/2 and I still use the glider before bedtime each night.

As a FTM, I didn't really want one. I thought it would just take up space, but my mom insisted on buying me a custom glider from a local furniture shop, and it is, by the far, the most comfortable glider that I have ever sat my little ass on. DS is very attached to the glider, so trying to get it out of his room for the baby will be a challenge, if possible at all.

It wasn't always in his room though; when he was a newborn, it was in our living room because that's where I was the most with him. It didn't actually go in his room until he was 8 months old.

  • Yes. Try to borrow one or find a used one if you can. You will be glad you have it.

No, they're not necessary. I much prefer a regular rocking chair myself! Even so, I didn't rock much with DD anyway.

    OMG too many tickers...

  • I did not have one for DS#1.  I would just bounce him in my arms for 10-15 minutes each night before bed.  For this baby, since we didn't really have to buy much of anything else, I splurged on a rocking chair from Pottery Barn.  Totally not necessary, but why not?

  • Not necessary but can be worth it.  I found our lazy boy rocking recliner at a garage sale for $5 brand new, the lady had just gotten divorced and wanted nothing to do with his left over things, so score for me!

  • We got a rocker recliner and used it every single day for well past a year. We just recently moved it from DS's room into LO's room.  I recommend trying to find a used one or ask family/friends that have kids and may be done with it.  I'm sure it's possible to get by without but I wouldn't want to since I've had one.

  • I was debating the same thing.  We didn't really have it in the budget for a new one either.  I turned to craig's list and found one that was almost like new for $100- much cheaper than in the stores.  When looking though, I found them as cheap as $30-40. We are very happy with the glider we got.  I haven't even given birth yet, and my husband spends a lot of his time in the baby's room rocking in it already :)
