Babies: 9 - 12 Months

fontanels closing early - vent

So I haven't been talking to any of my friends or family about this and i'm just about ready to burst so I thought I would share it on here. I took LO (shes 9 months) to the doctors for her 9 month checkup on monday. The apt was going fine, but then the Dr. went to check her fontanels on the top of her head. She kept looking and looking and was saying she couldn't find them. She finally found them but said they are quite small. I asked if they were big enough for her head to grow and she wasn't sure. Then she mentioned that LO's head is quite long instead of round.  She wanted us to come back in month to monitor her head. So i left the apt worried but not to much.  On wednesday I got a call from the nurse at the clinic. apparently the Dr. had been thinking about LO (never a good thing!) and her head and she wants her to go to a head shape clinic. So now i'm just waiting for a call from the clinic so we can book her apt.  I did some researching on Dr. google which has just scared me more.  I hate this waiting game and I just want LO to be perfect. Anyway, sorry this is so rambling but I just needed to get it out. I don't want to talk to anyone until I know what the news is so this is the next best thing.

I am in no way saying this is what your son has, but based on what you stated, this could be what he has. If so, it seems that, other than the surgery, the child suffered no lasting affects.

If this is what your child has.

  • I'm so sorry you're dealing with this.  It's never fun when waiting for an appointment for something you're unsure of.  Please, try not to google or diagnose from google before you see the doctor.  There are probably a thousand stories of similar symptoms that all have various different outcomes.  Google is not your friend when you're dealing with medical issues before visiting/consulting with a doctor!

I hope that they call back soon and get you in for an appointment ASAP!  Good luck!

  • I'm sorry you're dealing with this!  Just wanted to let you know that my friend went through the same thing with her baby.  Baby M had to get a cat(?)scan, which determined that there was nothing to worry about.  They're still keeping an eye, but things look really good.  Google also freaked the crap out of my friend before the test though...I know it's easy for me to say but it's probably better to stay away!

    Good luck!!

This is what my son has.  We'll be having surgery in the next month or two to correct it.  It's a very common surgery, but still a big deal.

To diagnose it, we did have a CT Scan to look at the bones, then they knew if it was fused or not.  Saw the surgeon and am now working at getting insurance approval.

  • I agree w/stepping away from Dr. Google.  Write down ALL your questions as you think of them so when you meet with the Dr. you can ask them all.  My daughter had a "sacral dimple" that the ped. was worried about when she was born.  It could have been either quite serious or nothing at all.  We went in for an MRI and all was fine but my mind wandered to a spina bifida diagnosis and I was worried until I got the results back.

Try to not get yourself too worked up.  Just ask a lot of questions and good luck!
