Sleep issue help?

To make a very long and detailed story short, here it goes;

DS has always been a really excellent sleeper from newborn up until a couple weeks ago, when the battle for bed time began. He screams, cries and throws a fit over bed time and when we actually do get upstairs, he doesn't want to get into his bed.

Our usual routine is to rock for 2-3 minutes, then give kisses and hugs and he goes into his bed without issue. If he's not tired, he will talk to himself or look at his book and eventually fall asleep but is quiet the whole time. Now? Not so much.

Now he stands at the gate at his door and literally screams and cries until he starts gagging. When I go to him, all he wants me to do is rock him or he wants to go downstairs on the couch or wants to go to Mommy's bed or <enter any place other than his bed here>

This fight goes on for an hour plus. One night this week, he didn't go to bed until midnight, and FI and I were constantly in and out of his room and at our wits end by then.

Once he's asleep, he doesn't stay asleep. He has been waking up 2-3 times during the night, asking that we rock in his room.

I really don't get it. He has a night light, the hall light stays on and we ask him what's wrong. All he says is, "Don't leave me." or "I don't want to go bed."

Though I'm full term tomorrow and we've included him in all things getting ready for baby, nothing has changed as of yet. Our bed time routine has been consistent since as long as I can remember.

Any ideas? What can I do? I am not only exhausted but I also don't want a newborn plus a toddler who are both constantly up in the middle of the night, especially since FI will work 24 hour shifts at a time.

Re: Sleep issue help?

  • I have been dealing with this for 1.5 months.  I have tried everything.  The super nanny technique of returning them to bed silently each time....was a HUGE FAIL for us.  The only thing working right now, is a slightly later bed time, a shorter nap and I lay on his floor while he falls asleep.  WHen he wakes in the night, I either lay of his floor again, get in bed with him, or put him in my bed.  It stinks.  I get up for work at 5:30 and some nights I am up for the day at 3am.  Hoping this phase runs its course SOON!  GL

  • A friend of mine went though this. She bought her daughter a full size bed and let her pick out the bedding and the issues just stopped. Strange, but true.

    Blehhh.... that was not comforting!

    The silent return fails for us too, both when he was transitioning to his toddler bed and now.
