My job was insane in 2012 and looks to stay that way for the next three months at least. My annual review was yesterday and I had to come up with a new salary request.
I went back and forth between asking for what I think I deserve (about a 13% raise) and asking for what I knew I could get (about a 6% raise) and finally told myself that being afraid of asking for more is one reason women don't make as much as men. So I went for the 13%.
My boss didn't even flinch. He told me I had earned it and deserved it and just needed to confirm the funding. I should get confirmation by next Friday. I'm so glad that I gave it a shot.
I might be able to hire that cleaning lady after all.

Easier said than done, but the worst he could have said to your 13 percent request was no, right? And countered with something lower? But you can't bargain upwards so there you go.
