PnP with Newborn Napper ?

DH and I started registering last week and had a question regarding pack-n-plays.  It seems like most of them now have a newborn napper.  Baby Bargains says to skip this option because they aren't safe and Lucie's list says that it is a must have.  Maybe I am missing something here but isn't that what the bassinet portion is for?  We like the Graco pnp's but had a hard time finding one with just a bassinett and changing table.  For those of you with this option do you like it and use it?  Thanks

Re: PnP with Newborn Napper ?

  • DS has been sleeping in the bassinet in the PNP since we brought him home. It seems perfectly safe to me, at least until he can roll over, then we will put him on the flat portion of the PNP for a month or so until we are ready to move him to the nursery.

  • We opted for the PnP with the bassinet feature and the reversible napper/changer, but after reading the baby bargains cautions against using the napper feature for sleeping, we'll probably not use it for that.  When I thought about it, it does seem like a lot of the warnings about sleeping infants are against using soft, plush things and that does seem like what the napper feature essentially is.  We'll probably just swaddle him and put him in the bassinet level for sleeping.

  • We used the napper for my son and he slept really well in it. I would've used it longer if he didn't grow out of it so quickly. On the other hand, I found the changer useless. I'm tall and it was way too low to be comfortable for changing so I never used it.

We had it and used it a lot. We didn't buy a bouncy seat, so this functioned the same way. We were able to pick it up and move it around wherever we needed it. Plus, DD didn't like sleeping in the big, flat bassinet portion of the PNP at first, so she slept in the napper for the first 2 months.

I've read the Baby Bargains review about it not being safe, but IMO it's no different than letting a baby sleep in the Fisher Price RNP - that has a bigger recline than the napper and it also has padding like the napper. And plenty of moms use those. (BTW, does anybody know if Baby Bargains has reviewed the RNP yet? I'm really curious if they have the same "not safe" review as they did with the napper.)

For us, the napper was a nice option because we didn't have the extra bouncy seat and we didn't have the RNP. If you are getting one or both of those, I'd say you probably don't need the napper option.

ditto all of this. it was fantastic in those very first newborn days,

  • We have the Graco PnP with newborn napper (plus a separate changing station), and I use it a lot.  I did read the concern raised in Baby Bargains.

Our PnP is in the living room so I only use the napper for naps during the day.  Since I'm around I can keep an eye on DS.  The longest he'll nap is 3 hours.

With the concerns raised, I don't think I would let DS sleep in the napper overnight when I'm asleep though.

I do like the napper a lot and DS naps much better in it than in the swing.  Plus, it's easier to have him swaddled in the napper than in the swing.  I'm pretty sad that DS will be outgrowing the napper pretty soon, and he's heavy so he can't really be in the bassinet portion either (15lb weight limit), which means I'll have to use the lower play yard section when he outgrows the napper!

  • Thanks for the responses.  We will probably just get one that has the newborn napper and just see how we like it.  I guess we can always take it off if we don't.  Thanks!

We used the Napper a lot with our first son, but then we read about the safety concerns, so we're not using it with our second son.

  • I bought a Graco PnP from Amazon that only has the part that raises the bottom up. No napper, no bassinet. I used my PnP for my nephew and didn't ever feel cheated or sad that I didn't have the napper or bassinet or any of that. The only downside is that the netting that holds the mat doesn't fit into the carry case.

  • If you read the fine print, is says the Napper is for supervised sleep only... hence it's a napper, not for nighttime sleep. Bbut I'm sure plenty of people let their baby sleep in it when they're not watching. That's likely why some reviews say it's not safe. It doesn't come with a harness like the RnP or swings, so in theory a very early roller could get their face in the fabric. But as far as I know, there are no reports of that happening.

The raised up part is the bassinet.
