High-Risk Pregnancy

GD and Glyburide

Failed my Glucose tolerance test. I had GD with my two previous pregnancies so I was exactly surprised. My doctor is putting me on Glyburide, which he says is commonly given now for GD. He has been doing so for the last year. I have not taken meds before for GD, just tried to control with diet. Has anyone taken it? I will see the dietician in the next week to start my diet and finger pricks. Fun times.

Re: GD and Glyburide

  • I have never been on medication either, but my dietitian told me that doctors have started to use oral medications more over the last year or so because there is sufficient data to back up is efficacy in pregnant women.  I tend to be more conservative, so if I have to go on medication, I will probably request insulin, but I'm sure glyburide is just fine too.

  • I take 2.5mg before bed to bring my fasting down (the only number I couldn't control with diet).  So far it has worked.  I was not happy to go on medication but once I did, it did make life easier.  I didn't have to worry about my mornings and fortunately I have never had to increase the dose.  Good luck to you.

  • The only number I couldn't get down with diet was my fasting number so I started on 2.5mg of Glyburide with dinner, then I was bumped to 5mg, and I'm now on 7.5mg..and that finally worked to get my numbers down.

Now that I'm on so much at night, I have to make sure to eat a good amount of carbs with dinner or my after-dinner number gets too low. Other than that, I haven't had any side effects.
  • I was on it. Worked great for my lunch and dinner but wasn't enough for my fasting and then it started creeping into my breakfast #s. So, my endocrinologist switched me to insulin. My OB was the one who put me on glyburide. But my endo still uses insulin only if diet doesn't work. My OB is based at an evidence-based, highly rated hospital so they're quicker to change protocols once they're proven to be safe and to work. I miss the glyburide but my fastings were horrible so it was gonna happen eventually.
