Wow, major swelling

Okay, I drink like 100 oz of water per day, and maybe have a diet coke or something with lunch, but other than that -- I don't really drink anything other than water.

Yesterday I had a day where I was mostly seated at my desk (no running around town for meetings).  I got home around 5:30 (about an hour commute home), and made dinner, which was all prepped so really i just had to stick it in the oven.

Point being, i wasn't on my feet much and I hadn't eaten anything weird all day.

When I went to change into my pjs -- I took of my yoga pants and slipper socks and was HORRIFIED to see CANKLES!!!!  I mean, major sock lines from my SLIPPER socks.  I am a larger woman but I have always had tiny little ankles and wrists, and that was just so gross I can hardly stand it.

About 90% better this morning, but still looking a little puffy.

Anybody else experiencing this / have any tips???

  • I had issues with swelling even before I got pregnant. I found if I use a foot stool it helps, also days that I wear flats and or sandals are worse.. if I wear tighter socks with shoes or boots, they don't swell at all.

May be time for compressions socks?

    It's uncomfortable!!

    Boo.

At least it is (knock on wood) just in my feet / ankles right now.  My rings are still too loose and I think my face looks normal. :-)

  • Boo!  That sucks.  Maybe look into your sodium consumption?  A lot of "healthy" foods actually contain a lot of sodium-- assuming you blood pressure is normal, I think we are supposed to limit our sodium intake to 1,500-2,000 mg a day, which is actually pretty low/easy to exceed.

We always buy "no sodium added" products wherever possible to make sure we don't overdo the salt intake.

  • I had the same problem strike yesterday. And we're going to my in-law's tonight and tomorrow (and 8-9 hour drive.) So I went ahead and bought some compression socks. From what I can see, though, the cankles are still as bad as they were yesterday. Ugh!

  • I had this majorly during my pregnancy with my son (but I was also in my third trimester during the summer).  I never found anything that completely took away the swelling, but Burt's Bees makes an awesome peppermint foot lotion for pregnant women that feels awesome on swollen legs/feet.  Put that on and keep your feet up as much as possible (at least when you get home from work), and that should at least help.  And while it's counter-intuitive, continuing with 100 or more oz. of water a day will help keep the swelling down.
  • I had MAJOR swelling / cankles when pregnant with my son.  I was pregnant all summer too.  It was so gross, strangers (one was a nurse) would stop me while shopping, etc. and tell me to go to the hospital!

Get your BP checked, make sure your feet are propped up, and remember to keep the blood moving (get up and move around).  Swimming also helps.  The only bad thing about the swelling is it could be a sign of preclampsia (sp).

Sodium, sugar and not moving play a part.

  • I had the same problem earlier this week - I definitely don't drink as much water as you do, but I drink enough. I wasn't really up and about much, and I had comfy shoes on so I'm not really sure why my feet were so bad that day. I'm chalking it up to hidden sodium. The cankles at the end of the night were not pretty, lol. I was worried it might be something serious, but I had an OB appoinbtment yesterday and my BP was great - 108/49.

  • I have this with my hands right this moment. I swear, any thing that I do with my hands make them swell and hurt

  • I have a docs appt in the morning so they'll check my urine and take my BP... my SIL had severe preeclampsia so it is on my radar, although i'm not really concerned (I have insanely low BP, so I guess if it is elevated tomorrow that could be a sign). Thanks!

  • I had this happen after a 3 hour car ride.  Asked my doc about it at my next appt because it was so unexpected.  She said the position of sitting will cause the swelling.  She suggested to pump my calfs occasionally when sitting to help keep the blood moving.  Also, to stand up and walk around for 5 min every 30min-1 hour.  If those things didn't keep the swelling down, then to prop my feet up until it went down.

Hopefully it won't get too bad next time.  Just keep that blood pumping :)

  • I definitely try and put my feet up for a few minutes every 3-4 hours. It really helps, especially if I spend a lot of time sitting that day.

  • I started swelling around this time in my pregnancy last time. It sucked! I'd just make sure you know what is concerning swelling wise and the rest will probably go away once you deliver!

  • Thanks ladies, I just put a little stool under my desk and put my feet up, so hopefully that will help!

    It's just so gross looking.

  • Do you eat much protein?  My Dr did some bloodwork for other reasons and warned me if my protein levels got much lower I might have a problem with swelling, so I guess that can be a factor.

  • This happened to me yesterday for the 2nd time during my pregnancy.  I think I had too much salt (soup for lunch paired with McDonald's for supper) and my socks might've been a bit too tight.  My feet looked deformed and like I didn't even have an ankle bone!  I sat with my feet up on the couch for a couple of hours before bed and they were fine when I woke up.
