Sweet oil for ear infection?

Anyone had any experience with sweet oil for an ear infection? I woke up at 2am in excruciating pain in my left ear. I've had a cold all week, so I'm sure it's related. 600mg of IB profen helped the pain but it's obviously still a problem. I feel a lot of pressure and sounds are muffled on that side. I don't currently have health insurance and would like to avoid a dr. appointment. A friend suggested sweet oil.. just wondering if it gets rid of the problem? How long I should use it? Any advice? TIA

Re: Sweet oil for ear infection?

  • I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing, but we've used garlic willow oil to prevent an ear infection in ears that looked a little red. If the infection is already so bad that you're in excruciating pain, you probably need an antibiotic. I'm sorry!

Maybe try a walk-in type clinic, like the ones at CVS or Walgreens? They have more flexible hours and probably don't charge quite as much.

This was a great idea... and apparently there are none in my state.

  • I know nothing about sweet oil. I have heard people using tea tree oil for the pain. Also, resting your head on a heat pad can help with the pain too.

  • Do you have a free clinic in your area? You will need an antibiotic.

  • I get ear infections pretty much constantly. Sweet oil, garlic oil, and olive oil and also an OTC drop that I think is just mineral oil and chamomile are amazing. Especially when I warm them up under hot water, stick a cotton ball in there and use a microwave hot pack on my ear, that makes it heal pretty quickly and I hardly ever use antibiotics anymore. Eta: I only use one kind of oil at a time.
