Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Another CIO Question...

Okay ladies, how did you decide when the right time to do CIO was if you chose to go this path.  I have always thought I wouldn't do this but I feel like nothing is working and sleep is getting worse and worse.  I read you shouldn't do it when baby is learning something developmental.  I feel like that is all the time for DS so how did you know it was the right time for you?

Re: Another CIO Question...

  • I asked my pediatrician the same question because DS was teething and I felt guilty making him CIO when he was teething.  She said if you truly want them to develop good sleeping habits, then anytime is a good time to let them CIO.I felt guilty but he was getting up every hour to hour and a half so I was desperate to try it.   We tried it that night and he woke up twice and cried for about 30 - 45 minutes each time.  Within three days he was sleeping through the night 11 - 12 hours!

  • After 6 months of waking up I was shot, we all were. It's rough but nothing else was working. She's been doing good. Although I think she's teething again and she wakes up at night but gets herself back to sleep after little crying.   I waited till I had time to devote, she was not sick or really teething to bad.

Sleep easy solution book was what I read. I used most of what this book said.

  • There is probably no perfect time, but developmental milestones and teeth are going to come up all the time.  We used the Sleep Lady Shuffle from Kim West's book Good Night, Sleep Tight right around the time my baby was learning to crawl.  Nighttime sleep was much easier to come by than nap sleep, so we held off on the nap training and focused on nighttime sleep.  It took about a week, but we were okay with that because we didn't have to go the extinction route.  You just have to find what you feel comfortable with and stick with it.
