For those who have been through PPD/PPA

Please tell me it gets better.  Since DS2 was born, I have been to the ER three times, partial hospitalization twice, and inpatient hospitalization for a week.  I am still struggling but it is better than when I was in the hospital.  I'm on medications and in therapy.  I've scheduled an appointment with a psychiatrist who specializes in postpartum mood disorders.

On Monday I told my current psychiatrist that I thought the depression was getting worse.  He said "well I don't know what else to do for you."  Umm, that's a good thing to say to someone who feels hopeless!  We have only tried one med.  He did offer some options after he said that but it still didn't make me feel very good!

I've been through depression before; I had it when I was pregnant with DS1.  So I know it does get better.  I just feel like I'm fighting a different battle this time.  I don't know if it's the postpartum hormones or what.  But the anxiety component is much worse this time too.

Anything else I should be doing to help get better??

  • Switch Psychiatrists. You can try different meds, you could try a combo, etc. do you exercise?

  • Yes it does get better.  How ever the therapist should have not said it that way to you.  Like you said that is not something some one in your position wants to hear.  Are you willing to try different medication?  Do you have friends or some one else you can talk to?

Yes, i exercise.  I used to do the gym but haven't gotten back to it after DS2 yet.  I've been walking every day outside for 45 minutes to an hour.

Yeah, I might try a new one.  I want to see the new doctor.  This one is increasing the dosage of the one I'm currently on.  Maybe it will just take a little more time.  The waiting is so hard.

  • It gets better! See a different doc, get different meds, and be sure you are seeing someone for some talk therapy!
  • I have not been through it to the extent you have but I would switch doctors ASAP.

  • I'm sorry you are dealing with this. It's hard, but it does get better! It took 14 months for my PDD to get better and 17 months until it was gone but it did go! Hang in there!

  • It gets much better! Switch doctors, switch meds, do you have someone who cam advocate for you? Don't take no for an answer, do what you need to to get well.
