Help...Nathan's beef hotdogs

Nathan's beef hotdogs or cheddar bratwurst? Has anyone eaten them during pregnancy? I love hotdogs and I haven't eaten them in 3.5 months!

Re: Help...Nathan's beef hotdogs

  • Yes.  I'm weird about hot dogs and brats anyways, pregnant or not.  I rinse them before I cook them, scrub my hands after I touch them, and then eat them right away.  My daughters have to have their hot dogs.  I'm already not in the mood to cook so when I do, I'm not cooking 2 separate meals.  It's not like I'm living off hot dogs.

  • Whaaaa? Why no Nathan's? I'm
A NYC girl and while I don't eat hot dogs off the street, never have, packaged hot dogs cooked at home, for sure! It's just the listeria threat right? I've even had some in the school cafeteria and now I'm wondering if I made a mistake. I actually had one yesterday and was just thinking how much I am enjoying hot dogs this pregnancy. With a slice of cheese in the bun!
  • Oh and yes, mine are always cooked. I never knew you could eat them
    Uncooked. Hmmmm
  • They can be eaten without heating up because they are already cooked but DON'T do it while pregnant! Yes you can have hotdogs, it's just like lunch meat. Heat them up in the microwave which is gross to me or cook them some other way. Just don't eat them raw and you are good.

  • Meh, I say eat them the way you want to eat them. If you like them cold (they are already cooked yo) then eat them cold. As long as they are kept at chilly temperature (like, not sitting out) then go crazy.

Some worry more about the nitrates than the worry of listeria when it comes to hot dogs. If you are paranoid, then heat the meat until its steaming. Really though, you have more of a chance of catching listeria from fruits and veggies.

    Enjoy your hot dogs.

  • LOVE Nathan's hot dogs.  They are the only hot dogs I eat.  I just had one a few weeks ago and it was glorious.
  • Here's the deal with hotdogs;

The reason they're "bad" for you is that they could harbor listeria. Even though they're precooked. Listeria is a very rare bacteria, but has a 25% mortality rate. (Salmonella has a 1% rate). So very rare, but very serious. Pregnant women, young children, and the elderly are particularly at risk.

Cooking until steaming kills the bacteria. However, you'll have to be careful about washing your hands after handling them straight out of the package. And make sure they're cooked all the way through. Maybe slicing them in two longways to cook them?

  • And you may also want to watch out for nitrates. They're in all cured meats and have been linked to increased risk of childhood cancers. I don't think it's a huge increase in risk, but I have a ton of cancer in my family so I figure it couldn't hurt to avoid them.

  • I'm a deprived Chicagoan who doesn't have Vienna Beef in Texas!  However I enjoy Applegate Farm Nitrate Free All-Beef Hotdogs.  They are pretty good :)

I have been wanting hotdogs too so I just bought the applegate nitrate free turkey dogs. They are really good, but now I need to find the beef ones. I did not realize they had beef.

  • Hey I'm just wondering, is that the main concern about nitrites while pregnant? Or?

I ask because I've been a champ about staying away from deli meats while pg, but cannot seem to get bacon off my mind, especially on the weekends when all I want to do is go out for greasy breakfast.

When I have been going out I've been getting my usual - bacon (super well done) and eggs poached soft. I've started to feel guilty about the runny eggs and bacon with nitrites. What are my risks, anyone know?

  • All I know is that it is 10:30 at night and I want a freaking hot dog SO BAD. Wonder what DH would say if I woke him up.

All of Applegate Farms' meats are nitrate free and uncured.  Even their bacon.  Buy some, cook and eat it!  Less guilt.
