Babymoon at 27 weeks? Thoughts/Advice Please.

DH and I were all excited to book our babymoon to the Carribean last night, and just before making it official, I got totally gun-shy. All the "What-If"s started going through my mind...Mainly, what if I go into pre-term labor while I'm abroad?

I guess my question to you ladies is: Those of you who are going/have been on a babymoon, how far along were you/will you be at the time of travel? And to those of you that haven't, would you feel comfortable going on a 4-day vacation to the Carribean at 27 weeks pregnant (assuming yours is currently a low-risk, healthy pregnancy)?

DH thinks I'm being a little paranoid, which I realize he's probably right. Just wanted to see how you ladies would feel about it, if you were in my shoes.

Re: Babymoon at 27 weeks? Thoughts/Advice Please.

  • Me and DH have ours planned for 29 weeks, we'll be going to New Orleans for 5 days :)

I wouldn't be worried about it, just make sure to have a copy of your relevant records from your doc to provide to the hospital "just-in-case." Also I'm not a very paranoid or overly cautious person (except when it come to what I eat and where it comes from haha), so I may not be the best person to ask, but I wouldn't worry and I'd say GO for it!

  • It is so hard to tell. I am taking two work trips (one halfway across the country, the other two states away) when I will be 26 weeks and 34 weeks. I have no problems doing it, as my first was induced at two weeks overdue and this one is already measuring a couple days behind (not to mention I am comfortable with the hospitals in the States, should I go into labor early).

However, I have a friend who went into PTL at 33 weeks with absolutely no signs, symptoms or indications and she cautions everyone against babymoons.

    Personally, if you're low-risk, I wouldn't have an issue with 27 weeks.

  • First babymoon was Hawaii I was 14 weeks and our second I'll be 29 weeks will be Chicago (family/friends). DH travels M-T so we have a lot of frequent flyer miles to use. Just worried about our 4.5 hour flight since we live on the West Coast...first one I had to pee very badly and all of the restrooms were full with lines so I had to wait 8mins to pee. I started crying in my seat.
  • This is something I would be paranoid about, but I'm a huge worrier. Maybe to ease your mind you can just research a little on what medical services are avaialble just in case, I am sure everything will be fine but at least you can be comforted by knowing what your options are before you travel.
  • We did our babymoon at around 22 weeks, however I would not have minded doing it at 27 weeks (with being a low-risk pregnancy). I say board that plane and get to the Caribbean!
  • I wouldn't worry about it! I agree with other poster's that you should check to be sure on how the medical is there and where it's located. 27 weeks is still pretty early.

However, can we come with you? Ugh. I'd love to go! We are hoping to have just one night away locally. If we can find someone to watch DD!

  • I am going to the Caribbean at 27 weeks pregnant too! Just talked to my OB about it yesterday ... she recommended that I have my 28 week visit early. So I will be seen the day before I leave just to make sure everything looks good with the LO and me.

DH and I bought trip insurance just in case we have to cancel at the last minute. My OB is also going to write us a letter approving the travel just in case we run into problems with airlines, etc.

  • I say go book that vacation and have a blast! I can understand why you're nervous, I would be a little bit too. I flew cross country at 26 weeks with DD and all was well, just had to remember to get up and stretch my legs now and then and to keep hydrated!

  • I just got back from babymooning in England to see my in-laws. I was there for two weeks...weeks 21 to 23. I wasn't as far along as you but I was there for a longer period of time.

IMO just make sure to get approval from doctor and DO NOT take your shoes off on the flight because surprisingly that can cause swelling. Keep comfortable shoes on that elevate your feet a little and drink a TON of water. Unfortunately when I got back to America my ankles/ feet were really swollen from travel and it took a few days to get back to normal. So please take my advice! Oh....and don't forget to get up often to stretch.

    Good luck!

  • It's not a babymoon, but my OB just approved a work related trip during my 28th week.  When I told her a direct flight was 4-4.5 hours she recommended splitting into two connecting flights instead to break it up and get me moving around more.  I'm glad I get to go on this trip as it's to an annual convention and I didn't want to appear as though I'm taking advantage of my pregnancy and ignoring my job.  Since the pregnancy has been normal, I'm good to go.

It just sucks that I booked a flight with a stop - it almost doubles my travel time overall both ways.Sad

  • I just returned from Mexico at 25 weeks pregnant. I am high risk and I was nervous. My doctor ok'd it on more than one occasion and it also helps that my H is an MD (well, he graduates from med school in 3 months). I'm not sure if I would've done it otherwise. Have you confirmed with your doctor that its ok? I also made sure to have copies of my medical records with me and I knew where the nearest hospital was. Both H and I speak Spanish so that helped with my comfort level as well.

  • We don't have a babymoon planned but I would feel comfortable going on a short vacation abroad if I had a low-risk pregnancy (and doc approved). I say go for it! If anything, just run it by with your doctor since they know best. I would think the doctor would give an all clear being that early still in pregnancy.

  • Thanks so much to everyone who responded! It's nice to hear your thoughts on this!

KateRN, we were looking into either the Bahamas or the Dominican Republic, with a slight edge to DR. After hearing about your friend though, I might now be leaning more towards the Bahamas, on the off chance that anything should happen while I'm traveling. Im betting the DR doesn't have nearly the same level of health care. Thanks for sharing that info.

  • Just got back from mine, and I know 22 weeks isn't 27 weeks, but I wasn't worried at all. Everything was perfectly fine, aside from the fact that my back went out toward the end--I've been having terrible back problems this whole pregnancy; I recommend bringing your own pillow!

  • Heck ya go.  I'm hitting the Dominican at 30 weeks.  Brothers wedding so I can't miss.  Just check your health insurance coverage to make sure you're good to go.  In Canada no one would cover me past 28 weeks, but my work benefits cover up until 32.

So check that out and enjoy yourselves!

  • I think you should be ok at 27 weeks but make a 'what if' plan just in case.  Enjoy!
