XP: Ladies who have had TSH tested, please come in!

My labs came back with TSH of 2.9. From everything I'm seeing online it looks like pre pregnancy TSH should be 2.5 or below. But my RE is saying this is within normal range.

Any ladies out there willing to share what their REs advised?

I also have a good friend who is a midwife and she told me the guidelines recently changed. So I'm not sure if my doc is going with previous guidelines or not and just wanted to get feedback from others who may have had this tested.

I am especially concerned about this because my blood tests from my loss in Oct when I was pregnant just a short time came back with elevated TSH like 3.7 or something. But the most recent pregnancy was lower at 2.7. So my RE is saying I'm normal but I'm not feeling 100 percent convinced.

Thanks in advance!

Re: XP: Ladies who have had TSH tested, please come in!

  • Hi, when I was trying to get pregnant with my first I was sent to an RE to have things checked out and he found that my TSH was 4.65 and stated that this was within the "normal" range but it was at the Highest end or "normal". He then stated that for optimal fertility the number should be under 2. I was given levothyroxine and it brought it to a 1.2 and that is when I got pregnant. This go round when he checked levels I was at a 2.9 and he upped my dosage and I am now at a 1.9 and he upped it again to try to get it a little lower in order to concieve again. Good Luck!

  • I've been hypothyroid since I was a teenager and learned I needed to keep it in check when TTC.  My levels were normal while TTC #1, but they jumped to well over 3 within a couple of weeks, when I saw my endocrinologist.  I freaked out, scared I was hurting my baby, but he just increased my dose of synthroid (levothyroxine), and it went under 2, where he wanted it.  My RE said up to 2.5 was fine, but there was that minor disagreement.

I was bad and never had my levels checked again during my pregnancy once the level went under 2, but this time I intend to be more vigilant.  I had my labs drawn sooner this time, and sure enough, they jumped from around .7 to 2.5 in less than 2 weeks, so I immediately upped my doseage, and go in to check my levels next week.  Even though DD was born with absolutely no issues, I still plan to test frequently, just in case my levels go up on the new dose.

Bottom line is this: definitely get your levels fixed, so that you are under 2.0 while TTC, and stay on top of it once you are pregnant, because you will need a higher dose.  The baby will leach it from you.  GL to you!

  • I saw a regular endocrinologist along with an RE and she recommended between 1-2 for pg.

Once pg, we checked my levels and adjusted meds multiples times.

I had multiple losses and other immune issues and blood clotting issues and was pg with twins, so I was monitored closely.
