High-Risk Pregnancy

Previous Pre-e and GD diagnosis

Hi all,

I have an (almost) 9 month old daugther and just found out that I'm pregnant again. I was put on hospital bed rest for pre-ecclampsia when I was 36 weeks pregnant and delivered her at exactly 37 weeks. My primary symptom was very high blood pressure but I did end up having protein in my urine toward the end as well. I'm wondering if any of the Mama's out there have had a subsequent pregnancy after have pre-e in their first and what kind of differences in prenataal  care I should expect.

I also had gestational diabetes (diagnosed at 25 or so weeks) and I know that my doctor will test me earlier in this pregnancy...what is the typical time that's done? (or is there a typical time). I know there's nothing I can do to cause or prevent the GD from re-occuring but I am trying to eat a loosly diabetic diet at this point to get on top of the problem early if it should re-occur.

I found this board to be so helpful and supportive in my last pregnancy so I am looking forward to the support this time around should I need it again.

Thanks!

Re: Previous Pre-e and GD diagnosis

  • I had both pre-e and GD last time.  I was induced at 37 weeks exactly after developing pre-e at about 36.5 weeks.  I was diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks.

This time I am seeing an MFM rather than an OB but that was my choice not a necessity.  I did a 2 hour GTT at 14 weeks and failed so I have GD again.  I was told at my first appt (before I was dx with GD) that I would have a u/s every 4 weeks to make monitor growth since pre-e can restrict growth and DS was 5.5 lbs.  I also have to do a 24 hour urine catch once a trimester and maybe more depending.  I have a BP monitor at home as well and I check periodically.  I've had some extra tests thrown in since I developed GD early (b/w, an EKG and a fetal echo).  I think that's it.

    Good luck with your pregnancy!

  • I had GD with DS and developed high blood pressure but fortunately never pre-e.  I tested at 8 weeks with a 1 hour test and failed.  It probably would have been later but my first appointment was at 6 weeks and we chose to do it at the next ultrasound to confirm heartbeat, I initially thought I was a little further along.  I started testing my numbers at home before getting the results and they were fine so they said to keep testing at least once a day and to expect a 3 hour at 24 weeks unless I had a reason to earlier.  The other weekend they started to get high, but I later found out I was sick.  I took a 3 hour yesterday and passed.

I have a bp monitor at home that I use to check periodically and I always always always ask what it is at each visit.  It's been fine at the office but I've had some days where it's ran higher but I haven't been more anxious or stressed, though probably sick, at home.  Keeping an eye swelling as well.  I had swelling and higher than normal bp for several appointments before it started getting clinically too high and I brushed it off last time.  I am going to be more assertive this time if necessary.

  • I didn't have GD with my son, but I the last few weeks of my pregnany my BP kept  creeping up, and I had a headache. Like you I only had a bit of protein at the end but they eventually induced for pre-e. This time I was diagnosed with GD at 26 weeks and my OB said that I was not at an increased risk of pre-e and it was more common in first pregnancies. Today and last week at my appointment my BP was about 25 points higher than it has been the rest of my pregnancy, so I am not being watched more closely for it. Plus I do have some nice swelling going on.

Good luck and enjoy your pregnancy!!
