Do I need to pick two places for registry

I was trying to keep it simple and just do BRU. But my MIL is insisting I do Target too.  But BRU had everything we needed and if I needed to return, I would only have to go to one place.
Should I take a few things off BRU and go register at target?

  • Will the majority of your guests have access to a physical Babies R Us store?  If so, I'd skip Target, I hear they can be kind of a pain to deal with as far as registries go.

  • Yes, most of them are locals or within major cities that have access to a BRU.

  • If everything you want is at one place, do one place. I only registered at two because not everything I wanted was at BRU.

  • I agree!  I only did BRU because they had everything we needed and we close to us and our guests.  The only reason to register at more than one place would be if you couldn't find everything you need at one store, or if some guests wouldn't have access to a particular store.

Ditto PP- I've heard horror stories about Target returns and registry problems.

  • I just registered this weekend at BRU and........Target.  Oh no!  I had no idea they have a reputation for being a hassle.  I did two places because several people insisted that I do to give guests more of an option.  I almost want to cancel my Target registry now and avoid the potential headache.

  • You really don't *need* to do two places, esp. if BRU has what you want & guests can go there (it's local etc.)  However, two thoughts crossed my mind you may want to consider:

    1) Target used to (so check, they may or may not anymore) offer a gift card just for registering.  So, maybe create a registry with a few items that are okay if duplicated--say, diapers, wipes, clothing items, bath items that are consumable so you'll always need more, etc.--and then you get the gift card whether anyone buys there or not;

    2) Some people, esp. those who don't have a lot of time, but like to shop at Target anyway, may appreciate having an option that won't require a second trip for them to hit your registry.

Basically, if you register for stuff that is pretty basic (as listed in #1) you shouldn't even have a problem with returns, since you'll always need diapers and such.  Good luck!

  • We only registered at two places because not all of our friends and family have a BRU close by.  People can easily look up your registry on BRU's website and then shop elsewhere if they want.  Also, not everyone is going to shop off your registry.  If BRU has everything you want then don't worry about registering anywhere else.

  • I registered at both, because some of my guests live an hour away from a BRU. Otherwise, I would have just done that one. Also, some people especially without kids regularly go to Target and not BRU, so it is easier for them.

But to answer your question, you don't HAVE to have two registries. But, whoever said that might have some insight into how your family prefers to shop.
  • You don't have to register at both. I registered at bru and target because I have a handful of guest who aren't close to bru. Well my target registry keeps getting all bought up while the bru only has 4 items purchased. So I wonder if I would have gotten less off my registry if I didn't register for target. I think even when bru is convienently located target is just easier for busy guests.

  • We registered at both BRU and Target. They have a lot of identical items but Target was more reasonably priced for certain things and we kept that in mind for our guests. Also there are a lot more Targets in our area that BRU and we wanted it to be convenient.

We had NO issues with returns at Target. Just update your registry online for doubles ect after the shower if it didn't make it and print off your gift log at the store which can be used as a receipt. We had a few gifts from Target (ie a pink pack and play for our son) that we were able to add to our registry and then return.

  • I would personally register at both places.  I've gone to showers where the MTB only registered at BRU but I found the exact same item a few dollars less at Target so bought it there along with something else.  I always buy off the registry...but it may not be from the store the MTB is registered at.  I price shop for the most part and your guests maybe want to do this as well.

You said "most" of your guests live close to a BRU.  What about the ones that don't?

  • Only do BRU - Target is a flippin hassle when it comes to returns.  You'd think that they would just return something if you had it on your registry, but you'd be wrong.  And although people are generally good with gift receipts, good luck keeping them straight and organized for after the LO is born.

Additionally, you may not know you need to return something until after LO is born...or even several months after that...which is long after the 60 day allowance that Target gives you...

BRU is really good with returns and so is BBB.

  • Just do BRU. Explain to MIL that u were lucky to find everything at one store. I would also bring up that many people recommended to avoid target due to their crappy return policy. She should understand that.

  • We registered at BRU and amazon.  We registered at amazon so the people that are online shoppers and live 20+ min wouldnt have to take an extra trip just to get something off of our registery.  Plus there are so many people that are online shoppers now and amazon has much better prices than BRU.
