LO's with allergy to rice cereal

Any moms to LO's with rice cereal allergy? I wanted to find out what some of the symptoms your LO had? DS only has rice cereal at daycare and I noticed that his face is really red and blotchy like. But it only happens during the weekday and only started last week when I brought in the rice cereal. I'm sending in other solids tomorrow to see if it helps. But wante to find out from other moms that may have experienced this. TIA!!

Re: LO's with allergy to rice cereal

  • LO's first solids (at 4.5 months) were rice cereal.  He had an immediate reaction of red blotches (it looked like mosquito bites but they were not raised) all over his body. When he spit it up, more would appear wherever the spit up landed on his skin.

We immediately stopped with all rice cereal and switched to oatmeal cereal instead (Earth's Best brand has one, as does Plumb Organics) and have had absolutely no other issues.  I have also heard that it is sometimes just a brand...so, you could try oatmeal and then try a different type of rice in the coming momths.

Around 7 months, after he started Stage 2 purees from Gerber Organics, we tried the "turkey and rice" and there were no problems and I'm sure some of the "mixed grains" in the purees have rice and there has been no reaction.

I don't know about your daycare, but our provider was shocked that he had a reaction to rice. She said in 20+ years, she had never seen that.

Our doctor told us that it is possible it was a fluke and not an actual allergy...but I decided not to take any chances.  So, know that it's possible it's not going to be a life-long, or even a long-term problem...your LO might be fine with rice very soon.

    Good luck!

  • My LO has eczema, which makes him more susceptible to food sensitivity.  When we gave him rice cereal, he developed red dots on his neck and chest.  At first we thought it was just an extension of his little drooly chin rash, but it went away when we didn't give rice cereal for a few days, then came back when we did. He's also sensitive to avocado -- when we gave him avocado, his eczema got really bad (red and blotchy, like you describe)

Like PP, we switched to oatmeal and had no isssues. Because of this and the eczema though, we definitely follow the 4 day wait rule for foods.  LO's dr. says that their systems are developing very fast, so like pp says, "know that it's possible it's not going to be a life-long, or even a long-term problem...your LO might be fine with rice very soon."

    Good luck :)

  • We don't have a reaction to rice, but we do to oatmeal right now. If I give him oatmeal cereal he breaks out in a bumpy itchy rash on his chest and in his diaper area, sometimes on his face. He does fine with the puffs that have oat flour in them, but because there are other ingredients I dont' think it has as much effect on him as just oatmeal cereal. Dr. said to try again when he is a year old.
