Max Total Time Per Night to CIO?

I'm interested in trying the CIO method for when my DS wakes up at 4am.  He goes to bed awake and falls asleep on his own so that is not an issue.  When he wakes up at 4 he wants to eat, but only takes about 1-4 oz of formula before going back to sleep. From what I've read if they aren't really eating a lot at the mid-night feeding that it is more of a comfort feeding than real hunger.  My real question is how long total time do you let LO CIO? My plan was to do 5 min, soothe, 7 min, soothe, then 10 min, soothe if necessary, then continue with the 10 min, soothe.  I just can't find an article that gives a recommended stop time...how many total minutes do you do this? Obviously, you can't let them cry for hours.  Any advice would help. Thanks.

Re: Max Total Time Per Night to CIO?

  • I may get flamed for this, but the first time we tried it at bedtime, it took just over an hour. The second night it was 30 mins, the third night 10, and from then on there is no fussing whatsoever. We just lay him down, say night night, he lays there for a few minutes, and passes out for the night.

I developed mastitis just before Christmas, and I was stupid and got him up in the MOTN to feed him instead of pumping. When mastitis symptoms were gone, he was still getting up. So I limited the time I gave him the boob until he didn't get it at all. Then if he got up and just fussed a little, I didn't go in there. But if he cranked it up, I'd go in and check his diaper, say night night, pacifier in, and left. He went right to sleep.

    Good luck, mama! :o

  • I think you have a good plan--it can't hurt to try. We maxed out at 15 minutes, but for me, it always depends on the level of crying. LO will often whimper or talk if he wakes up in the middle of the night...we will let that go for longer. But, if he's screaming like crazy, we watch him on the monitor and go get him more quickly. Good luck!

  • Thanks Ladies.  We tried last night and I think it went well.  It took about 45 min total with us going in 3 times before he fell back asleep.  He then slept for 7 more hours! Woooooo! I hope that tonight goes well too! Thanks for the encouragement...it's hard hearing a LO cry!
