What do you do on your birthday?

I hate my birthday, I hate the need to do something special for it. My birthday is tomorrow, and I'm having lunch with my parents and my little brother, then at night DH and I going to my favorite hotel to have dinner (the hotel is a dream, and it's 4 blocks from my house). We can't stay in the hotel because Sophia still nurses 3 times a night. The next day I'm going to our country club with a friend and her daughter to have lunch and use the swimming pool, on Sunday I'm seeing family and having dinner and cake with them, and next Wednesday I'm seeing a couple of friends and we're going out to lunch. Those plans sound great, right? Why am I not excited in the least bit ? :(

Re: What do you do on your birthday?

  • I have a twin sister, so I call her on our bday, and that is pretty much it. I'm not big on birthdays.

Your plans sound overwhelming to me, I'd request that next year for your birthday to be left completely alone, lol!

ETA: I'm also very much so an introvert though, there were 10 people at our wedding and even that was 'too many' for me. We also only told those 10 people 2 days before the event because I couldnt stand the thought of having to discuss it.

  • For me, I hated birthdays ever since I turned 29yo - it was because I was aware of my age...it sucked.

  • For my last birthday in November I took the kids to the local Childrens Museum during the day.  Then when DH got home we went out to dinner as a family (a Meican place).  Then the next night my in-laws took us out for dinner.

Didn't do much and wasn't too much at all.

  • Last year we went to Storybook Land.  The year before we went to the zoo.  I find myself unsympathetic here. ;)

ETA - I'll try to be helpful - what about time alone?  It seems like a lot of people time, but no alone time.  But I am big on alone time.  For Mother's Day my husband was trying to figure out what to do.  My request was "leave and take him with you".  I spent the whole morning in bed reading the paper and then watched a movie.  It was heaven.

  • I celebrate as long as I can. I love birthdays. I mean...it's a holiday all about me! We also got married on my birthday, so even better. I make big deals about birthdays with everybody. I love to celebrate them all!
  • This year on my birthday, we went to the beach for a long weekend {My birthday falls close to Labor Day} and I went to about 4 lunches with different friends. I also had a group birthday dinner with some other friends. Love it! I love getting older. My best birthday yet has been 30.
  • DH takes me shopping in the Falls and we go for a nice lunch and a few drinks. My birthday is Christmas Eve so we don't do anything crazy.

  • Go out to dinner.

I refuse to cook on my birthday.  Thats about all we do.  Sometimes we will go see a movie.  We used to go get drinks, but that won't be happening this year.

  • I am usually burnt out and trying to make the best of it.  March is a busy month.  My dad's birthday is a week before mine, DS birthday is 5 days before mine, and DD is born on my birthday.  I have usually planned everyone else's birthday celebration, and by the time I get time to celebrate mine, I would just rather not think or hear about birthdays ever again.  To add to the fun this year, Easter is about a week after our birthdays (adding another dimension of stuff to do on my plate).

Generally, my parents' take all of us out for a communal birthday celebration, and that is about it.  If I get a cake, I have to make it myself most of the time.  Half the time, DH doesn't even buy me a present, because we spend too much money on everyone else that month.

Honestly, I have started hating my birthday since DD was born. It might sound selfish, but I seem unimportant to everyone.  It is all about my kids, and it really bums me out.  I would be happy with a store bought cake and a night on the town with my hubby, but no one thinks to offer.

  • Wow!

My birthday is always around Thanksgiving, so sometimes its hard to do things with other people. We always go out for supper during the birthday week. My parents happened to be in my town the weekend before my birthday, so they came over for supper and my DH bought an ice cream cake and we had a little party. We were traveling for Thanksgiving on my birthday, but once we got to my ILs, we went out to the local pizza place (my request). My MIL and FIL made me a cake, which was very nice, and DH's grandparents came over. It was fun.

I really like my birthday, which is probably weird. I'm sure once I get older, I won't so much.

  • Would you be more excited about those things if they weren't centred around you? That's how I am... I love going out for dinner, or to a celebrate, but I don't like it to be directed towards me... I'd much rather be at someone's else birthday than my own.

DH usually takes me out to my favourite restaurant, and then my parents make me whatever dinner I want and invite the rest of the family, ILs, etc.  I like to keep it as low key as possible.

  • Those are some busy birthday plans!  Sounds fun, but I'd probably want a little down time or "me" time for my birthday.

We used to go to the beach a lot for my birthday and spend the weekend with my family (who would most likely be at the house anyway) and go somewhere fun for dinner or drinks.  Or we would do a night in the city, dinner and drinks.

Now we just do a dinner at my parents house with immediate family on a neighboring weekend night, and my DH and I try to use my actual bday as an excuse for a date night.  Nothing too fancy.

Completely off topic, but are you really 43.5 weeks pregnant? holy bajeezus.

Lol, no! Oh god, I can't even imagine. I have an almost 4 week old. I just haven't remembered to change my tickers the few times I've been on the computer.

  • I have a love/hate relationship with birthdays. I love them for everyone else and go over the top with parties and celebrating, but when it comes to mine I really don't need much. We usually go out to eat with both of our families and then maybe for a few drinks. This past year I spent the day with DS and then the following weekend my FI surprised me with a trip to Chicago. We went with BIL and SIL. It was so much fun. Shopping and eating at some great restaurants.

Agreed! My girlfriends threw me an awesome surprise dinner for my 30th.

We usually go away for our birthdays because we make a big deal out of them. Sometimes it's just a short weekend getaway.

  • Usually nothing, which is part of the reason I hate my birthday. Its the day after Valentines day...So most of the time all the hype is centered around V-day and everyone forgets my birthday (My own PARENTS forgot one year..talk about teenage angst)
