Like nails on a chalkboard!

My blood runs cold whenever LO grinds his teeth! Why is he doing it? And does he know it makes mommy shudder? Any other LOs do this? Is there anyway to stop it? When I ask him not to he gets mad and does it more! Any advice is appreciated.

Re: Like nails on a chalkboard!

  • What? You have good ears! When does your LO do this? What mood (initially) is your LO in when doing this?

Can you give a sippy or a snack to break the initial habbit?

the fact that your LO does it when he is mad too tells me grinding is a quick behavior your LO has mastered. I was just thinking about starting a post about LOs' coping mechanisims.

I think I will so your post can stay on point!

  • Oh my gosh yes! Lylah used to do this! It sounds like they are chewing on marbles. It was a short phase. I just tried to distract her. I think it was because if teething.

  • I have no advice but that would drive me nuts. I hope you can get him to stop.
  • Yes!! Ew I hate it.

I either stick my finger in there or squeeze her cheeks like a fish face.

  • I'm getting chills just reading this and remembering that phase. It happened when he got new teeth and thankfully didn't last long.

My ears don't even need to be good he is THAT loud. DH had him downstairs after dinner and I heard him all the way in the kitchen! I don't think there is one specific mood in which he grinds his teeth, maybe boredom but I'm not sure. It's kind of whenever and then when I ask him to not do it he gets mad at me and he continues to do it. I think I am going to try offering a sippy more like you suggested. His coping mechanism is more thumb sucking. Hes just a very orally fixated baby even since birth he had to have my boob in his mouth at all times.

Oh I hope it's bc of teething and wont last long. He does have his 12th tooth trying to break through so maybe it is teething related.
  • Max has done it a few times and yikes! That sound is horrible.
  • I agree with the teething theory. M did it for a while, and now that I think about it, she doesn't do it anymore. She's had the majority of her teeth, including molars, for quite some time now.

  • My H grinds his teeth in his sleep. Sometimes I have to sleep in the spare bedroom because its so disgusting. I don't have any advice for you, but I feel your pain! It has to be one of the WORST sounds in the world!

This is what B did. After her front teeth came in she was grinding them all the time. I haven't heard her do it in awhile, not even since she's started to get molars.

  • A does this too and I hate it! The sound is horrible. I think it is the teething and he is trying to stop the pain. I really hope the rest of his teeth pop through soon and this grinding is over.

  • J did this for about 2 weeks after his top and bottom teeth were in.  It's a new sound for them, and probably feels funny.  I tried to ignore it, but I won't lie - he got his binky way more often than usual while he was going through that phase.
