Moms of boys...please come in

Okay, maybe it is just because I'm a girl and I don't understand, but I swear DS's infatuation with is junk has already started. Perhaps it is because it is trapped in a warm moist diaper a good portion of the day...I don't know. But everytime I take DS's diaper off, down his hand goes and he is grabbing and jerking on his stuff. I swear he pulls it up past his navel! There are no bumps, no telling reason as to him having a serious case of the itchies...so what gives? Do all little boys do this? I know he is stiff figuring out what his body is all about, but it drives me BSC!!! Should I be concerned that he is tugging on his penis too much, or is this normal? Please help before I go totally nuts!!

  • pretty sure its normal.  Our little guy discovered his junk in the bath tub a few weeks ago, and since then has been grabbing it every chance he gets.  I think its still a bit of a novelty "toy" since he doesn't get to see it all that often...
  • Yep, I'm pretty sure that's normal. They start young, lol. I've heard that sometimes even boy fetuses will play with their junk. I give DS a toy to play with to distract him so he doesn't go grabbing it as soon as the diaper comes off, esp if it's poopy.

  • It's totally normal. It's like exploring any other part of their body, only it's hidden 99 percent of the time. I hear that even when they're little, the penis talk even starts right away, too.

  • Lovely....well at least i know what I'm in for then. And I give him stuff to keep him occupied but he has gotten so good at playing with things one handed that he will switch hands, hold the toy or whatever with his right hand, and down goes the left. UGH!!! It is frustrating especially when there is poop in that general area, or I'm trying to put cream on him. In a split second he has reached down and now has the cream all over his hand...GRRRRR!!! Drives me nuts!!

    This.

He has more control of his hands and he just 'naturally' puts them there during the diaper change, but does't really notice it in the bath.

    yep...

I read an article that said when potty training starts, they will want to compare to dad (not the dad showing of course) but asking dad about size, and how big he is and so on...

  • I have found that giving DS a soft book is just about the only thing that keeps his hands away from it so I can change his poopy diapers. He has to use both hands to hold the soft book off of his face, and he likes to chew on it as well. It has saved a little bit of my sanity.

  • My son has been doing this since about 4 months.  He's so aggressive when he does it too.

We give him a toy to play with during diaper changes, which he plays with for a few seconds and then right back down to it.  We wash his hands after every diaper change.

  • Glad to see I'm not the only one having this happen too. My son can sometimes be distracted by a toy, or an empty wipes container/bag (his favorite thing to play with besides his junk during diaper changes). We have a friend who's son is 1 month older and they aren't having the same problem, so I was really starting to wonder if it was just my LO. It's almost a 2 person job to change a poopy diaper because we need 1 person just to hold his hands so they don't go straight into poop when you open the diaper!

  • I used to give DS two little toys, one to hold in each hand, to stop him from playing with it.  About a week ago, he pulled on it so hard that he cried (go figure!), and ever since then, he hasn't pulled on it.  And now during a diaper change, he'd put his hand on it - not touching, but just enough so that his little hand is covering it.  I guess it's to protect it from harm?  LOL.
  • It's normal.  But at this point, it's no more different than his fingers or elbow.  It's just something to pull on that he can feel.  It's not sexual.

  • Lol...

My LO does the same thing when I change his diaper and when I give him a bath. He just loves to tug, tug, tug it!

    Its normal...don't worry.

  • Oh just wait!!  Haha when DS1 was about 2 1/2 he had a rash so he was having some naked time.  We were chilling' out watching a cartoon and I look over and he totally playing with it.  I said "let's not do that in front of mommy".  He replied "but look mommy I can make it move up and down!!".  Haha boys will be boys.

Yep, welcome to manhood, little man! You'll be doing this the rest of your life...  ;o)
