if I'm having problems with burping my little girl i lay her across my knees and use the palm of my hand and pat her back not to light and not to hard. or most of the time i give her a few min after eating and when i go to move her she does it on her own.
I'm not sure if you're BF or FF but apparently it's pretty normal for BD babies to not burp. They don't swallow very much, if any, air while nursing. My boy doesn't burp very often either.

The nurses at the hospital said this. I occasionally get a belch out of DD, but not much and she's BF.
Mine is bottle fed, and we learned in a parenting class to burp by holding her in a sitting upright position, so she is facing to the right or left on our lap. You have to hold her head with your thumb and pointer finger along the jawline, so you don't stress the neck muscles.
Then we make a cupping hand and give a firm pat on the back repeatedly. The cupping allows a good pat coverage but doesn't hurt her because the pressure is dispersed across the back that way. I have found this to be sooo much better than putting her up on my shoulder and patting her back.
I'm having trouble too. =( DH on the other hand can burp her within seconds. It annoys the crap out of me. I swear I do the same thing he does, but it never works for me! FWIW, he sits her up on his knee, holds her head from the front and pats her back. Works every time. Until I try doing it, of course. Boo.
I get the best results holding LO on my shoulder. He usually gets his arms up so they are resting on my shoulder and holds his cheek against mine. It's pretty sweet...until he lets out a huge belch. Then it's just hilarious that such a huge sound can come from a little peanut.
I BF and def don't get a burp most times (I'm pretty sure she holds it in so she can pass it the other way:/) If shoulder or sitting on my leg doesn't work I hold her kind of like I would while nursing and pat her that way. Many times having her mostly on her side gets the best burps from her.

This is us exactly. All I can guess is that he pats her a little harder than I do.
we've found ours burps better after gas drops. Also with our first we needed to shake her up by bouncing on our knee then burp her. I have no idea the mechanics of why this worked - shook the milk to the bottom of the stomach allowing the gas to rise????? but it was weirdly amazing.
