**Chunstad** and other K-12 teachers...

(Mobile bump: Chunstad and other K-12 teachers...)

Can you tell me what kids in grades 3-6 know in the topic of life science? I looked up some standards but I am still unclear as to whether they know that life requires carbon and nitrogen and why. However, any info about what they know would in regard to life and living things be helpful. TIA.

  • Oliver is learning this in science this year,  in 6th grade.  He just had a quiz last week.  He is in accelerated science.  I'm not sure if they touched on it in the past, but I'm pretty sure they did not.

  • While I was subbing in a fourth grade class, I had to teach science. This was at the start of the school year. I taught them about matter, molecules, and atoms. But it didn't go into detail about the elements and the structure of the molecules. That much detail is a little abstract for fourth graders.I'm not sure about 5th and 6th graders.
Not much help, but hopefully it gives you a starting point.

In all the grades we talked about these, but just on a grade appropriate level.  We taught three different units through the year, and we received Science kits to go along with it  In third grade, we grew plants and we studied the life cycle.  In fifth grade we built terrariums and each team of students had their own ecosystem. Technically they should know about those things, but if they missed a ton of school, or didn't focus in Science, they might now have absorbed it.  I've attached the standards for your Wednesday night reading pleasure.  I'm not sure if I've answered your question as thorough as you need.  Feel free to message me if you need further clarification :-)

  • Thank you very much Penny, Rous and Chunstad! I am doing an outreach in 2 weeks and just completed my lesson plan. It is about the search for life on Mars and the Curiosity mission. I took a bunch of things out of my slides including the amount of nitrogen on Mars because I thought it might be over their heads. I figured they may not know that life also requires carbon, and nitrogen. I also didn't want to make it so simple that they thought it was boring and dumb. This really helps me a lot.

Chunstad, I will be teaching in WA so I may send you a PM after I look over the science standards. Thanks so much for the link!

I wouldn't take it out, leave it in.  You never know who's interest you may spark :-)

  • Life science is usually 7th grade in CA but they do talk about our bodies needing nitrogen in 6th grade when they learn about the nitrogen cycle and nitrogen fixation. I know in 5th grade they also cover body systems and maybe touch on needing nitrogen since it is so important in DNA. I'm also pretty sure they talk about carbon being essential to life.
