High-Risk Pregnancy

Cerclage

If anyone here knows of or has a cerclage story please share. I had a LEEP procedure done 2 years ago and have known that I would need a cerclage around 12 weeks of pregnancy. I had surgery at 14 weeks and dr said she "had to do it very tight" due to little to no cervix. She informed hubs that I will either need to have surgery again to have it removed, or have epi to remove it and then immediately be induced. I REALLY would like to go into labor on my own. I also worry about possible bed rest further on. Please share!

Re: Cerclage

  • I have a preventative cerclage. I will have it removed around 36 weeks and then will hopefully go into labor on my own around full term. If you question your physician get a second opinion. That really is harmless. Prayers you have your ideal and safe delivery.

    caden, are you on bedrest?

I had my cerclage on Friday. my cervix is 4.4, but here's my history:

    LEEP in 2004

Full Term pregnancy and 10 lb 6 oz baby in 2008

    Miscarriage 2009, emergency D&C

Unexplained dilation at 27 weeks (1-2 cm)  in 2010. Full bedrest for 8 weeks before delivering at 35 weeks.

This cerclage was preventative & suggested by both my peri & ob. I have been taking it easy since Friday (3 days full bedrest) and now only self-prescribed minimal up and down since my DH had to go back to work & i have 2 boys to take care of. I am hoping to make it to 35-36 weeks, but I'm not sure what the future holds. As of now my docs said i can go back to normal life but i am desperately frightened of loss or a baby being born too early.

  • I lost a baby girl last year due to incompetent cervix and short cervix at 22 weeks. My new doc is taking no chances after I told him how devastated I was. I got the cerclarge at 10 weeks because I was already shortening. Nearly nothing to stitch. The original plan was to be off bedrest after 2 week, but after good results with bedrest he continued to recommend bedrest. I'll probably be spending the entire pregnancy in bed. Not fun at all. But my experience is pretty extreme. I've seen ladies on the HR and PGAL board coming off bedrest after a cerclarge. Some r put back on bedrest later in the pregnancy but everyone is different.

  • No, I am not on bedrest right now.  I pray I don't have to go on at all.  I was on modified bedrest for a week after the procedure, but then after that they said I don't have any restrictions.  As of last week my cervix was longer than it was when I got my cerclage, but this is truly the week that I started having issues with my son.  We will see what the next few weeks hold.  Like I said I don't have any restrictions per say, but I do try to rest as much as possible and I have tried to hold off on sex as much as possible.  I need to past the mark I had my son before I start feeling comfortable.  Good luck and I pray it works well for you.
  • You don't have to be induced when the cerclage is removed. Some people go into labor soon after while others don't for weeks. I don't think I've ever heard that one has to be induced.

My preventative cerclage was placed at 16 weeks. I haven't been on bed rest at all, just told to take it easy. I still go to work. So far so good. Bed rest recommendations depend on your doctor. Mine don't really think it works. They'll only put you on bed rest if there's nothing else to be done.

  • My cerclage was placed at 22w6d and removed 13 wks later. The removal was done in the dr's office. I don't see why you would have to be immediately induced? Usually it's taken out around 36-37 weeks...most people go into labor on their own but some do end up having to be induced b/c they are overdue.

  • I had a rescue cerclage at 20 weeks.  Since my cervix was almost gone, the doctor was not sure how much cervix he was able to get and feared that it could be vaginal wall.  Vaginal wall would not hold the stitch as a cervix would so I was on full bed rest from week 20 through 29, then modified through week 34.  I had my cerclage removed at 37 weeks and immediately dilated.  DS was born 12 hours later.  For my next pregnancy I will get a preventative cerclage at 13 weeks and should be able to lead a normal life.

Although I believe the LEEP procedure caused my problems, it does not guarantee a short cervix.  It sounds like your doctor is playing it safe by giving you a cerclage at all, and since you received it early on it seems the odds are in your favor.  This is just based off of my experience, and conversations with my own doctor.

     Good luck to you!
