Before I post on TN, anyone ever try reupholstering?

So I bought this bright red, velvet swoop arm chair on craigslist the other night for $7 thanks to pinterest.  I wanna try to reupholster this thing newb-style.  Never done it so it's probably going to end in a lot of tears and money thrown out the window but it had all the right requirements for a pinterest project (ugly, old, cheap, and you had to drive to a scary part of town to get it).

JW if anyone has ever tried this before and has any tips or a site they used for reference.  I'll post this on The Nest but just wanted to ask the ladies I knew before going to a board with potentially not-so-nice peeps.

This looked promising.  I have done some reupholstering for theater sets but that doesn't have to be done as well as something for real life uses.  My only advice is to take your time.

  • Ohh, thanks so much!

I'm going to sift through those links right now.

The chair has a separate cushion that is intimidating me.  I don't own a sewing machine so I don't know how I am going to get around that part.  There is also some piping, but if I tear that off, maybe I can get around installing new piping and just adding those studs (is that what they are called? thumbtack looking things?) or something for any effect that it's missing.

  • I did a wingback chair once.  It really wasn't so bad!  I got some books from my mom about it, which helped with technical details.  But otherwise, just rip off the old fabric, pay attention to what order it comes off in, use the old pieces as a pattern, and then basically reattach in the same order that you took the original fabric off in.  I was really happy with how mine turned out.  It was time consuming but not really difficult.

  • Thanks for the input ellehinck!  And great idea about just remember which order they go in.  Seems simple enough.

I think it's the cushion and the piping that's really getting to me.  Oh, and I forgot - It's a button-back!  Yikes!

I was reading that I should do the button back first, so I'll need to buy some buttons to cover and start with that area.

Any ideas on how to recover the cushion without a sewing machine?
