Hey ladies, I was just wondering if anyone here has had a D&C before? I?m having my first one tomorrow morning and I?m not really sure what to expect. If you wouldn?t mind sharing your experiences with it, I would really appreciate it. I?m just a little scared/nervous/worried. Thanks!

Re: Advice about a D&C
I had 2 DCs with my first loss. Over all besides the emotional side of everything it was relatively easy on the body. You are asleep for all of it and I did not wake up with any pain. I was crampy and took it easy for several days but nothing unbearable. My second was just bc of some left over material and it pretty rare. Lots of tps

My d&c was super easy. I went back to a little room where I met with a nurse. She was very kind. We talked about what they were going to do & started an IV. The one thing that turned my stomach is that every time a new person (nurse, anasthesia, surg tech...) talked to me, I was asked to describe in my words with I was there for. The procedure itself, I was wheeled into a room, moved onto the table, counted to 10 & I was out cold. I woke in another room & DH was sitting next to me. & that was it.. ::hugs:: again
I'm so sorry for your loss.
I have had several D&Cs. Most were similar in that I checked in, changed clothes, talked with the doctor, sat a while with my DH and then was wheeled back and put under. When I woke up, I knew that it was over and I wouldn't have to go through miscarrying naturally. I just rested and took it easy after DH brought me home.
I hope it goes quickly for you. Hugs.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. It's not fair that ladies who've already had losses have to have more.
I've had a D&C, but not for pregnancy loss reasons. My experience was similar to what the other ladies described (minus the emotional side, of course). As someone else mentioned, I was asked by each new person treating me what I was there for...so be ready for that. My physical recovery was minimal. Little cervical discomfort and some irritation from the catheter...didn't need anything more than 800mg Tylenol to take care of the pain.

First and foremost, please double check that they put you under general anesthesia. My ex-OB only used local and I didn't realize until it was too late. She also inserted a tampon w/o telling me that I didn't find until later the next day since I was somewhat numb down there (the local did numb the labia and part of the vagina, but def not my cervix or inside of my uterus so the dilating before hand and the actual procedure was very painful.)
Try to see if you can get pain meds before the procedure so you can take them once you wake up. My cramping was instant and pretty bad until I could get some meds.
Just take it easy for a couple days. I felt normal after about 2-3 days. From what I hear, if you get general, it overall isn't too bad physically.
My experience was similar to all the other pps. I wasn't asked why I was there multiple times though. Besides the emotional mess, the procedure was relatively easy. Healing physically was quick, and I had very minimal cramps.they sent me home with Vicodin and ibuprofen. I really only needed the ibuprofen.

Oh my goodness, S, this sounds so horrible. I'm sorry you had to experience that.
OP, as the PPs said, having the procedure under full sedation is a very controlled experience. There was some minor cramping for a day or 2 but nothing a couple Vicodin on day 1 and regular Tylenol on day 2 could not handle. It is worth confirming that this is how the procedure will be for you (do I remember that you are outside the US? - might or might not matter).

I'm sorry for your loss and hope the D&C is as painless as possible, and that your recovery is quick!
I had a D&C at the hospital, because I tries miscarrying naturally, and some placenta remained behind - formed a clot around it - and my body started hemorrhaging trying to get it out . . . I was wheeled back from the ER to the surgery area around 3AM, given something to knock me out, and woke up in the elevator on my way up to spend the night in the hospital (because my blood pressure dropped so low). My recovery was okay - but I had anemia from blood loss, so it took longer for me to walk around without feeling lightheaded. Iron pills helped a bit ~ cramps were pretty much done within a few days, and by about a week I was feeling good enough to run errands.
I wish none of us had to go through this - and that you are going through it now! I will need to hug my DS a little tighter tonight ~

I am very sorry about your loss. Sending lots of hugs and T&Ps
Looks like it's probably too late for the advice piece but others have covered it well. The only additional thing I would add is that I was asked whether or not I wanted to send the remains to a funeral home for burial. I was completely caught off guard by this and felt like a bad mom for telling the nurse that there wouldn't be a memorial for our 10 week old LO.
Huge hugs to you. I'm so very sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
I had a D&C with my 2nd loss and the other ladies covered pretty much all if it. I did want to add one thing that no one told me. It's normal to have bleeding and lots (lots!) of clots for a week or two after. TMI I had one huge golf ball size clot about a week after the procedure. I freaked out because it was so big! (and it hurt a lot, too!) Of course, not everyone experiences this, but if you do, it's normal. When in doubt, though, call your doctor.
I hope everything goes smoothly.

This time I'm not leaving without you.
I've never had a dc for a m/c, only exploratory laparoscopy. For that I was pretty sore the next few days. I'm so sorry you're going through this.

Ah, yes, I can't believe I forgot about this! My OB suspected I had a little bit of retained tissue because I started having stabbing pains a few days after the procedure and then proceeded to pass large clots for several hours. It was really scary. Had I known what was going on, I wouldn't have freaked out so much.
