If LO plays sports...

We're in trouble, lol. We just went to my fourteen yo sisters basketball game. The ref called a technical foul because someone was throwing elbows and hit someone in the head. Following the call, a parent on the other team was throwing a fit about how that's part of the game.

To some extent, I agree with physical play, but to the head...I just don't agree. I listened for about 5 minutes, but then I had to speak up. She responded very ignorantly and continues to speak loudly so I can hear. I very calmly reminded her that if it was her daughter getting a blow to the head it'd be a different story. She told me to grow up...when we left, DH asked if I was trying to start a brawl. He knew I couldn't keep my mouth shut for too long, but congratulated me on keeping my cool. Theres no real point to this post, other than me complaining about people's ignorance.

Any other defensive mamas out there? Any other moms that will be ThAT mom on the sideline?

  • Yep. Some parents are out of control and if it involves my kid you better believe I'm going to speak up.

  • not only will I speak up for my kid, but I will for other kids.  Yep, I am that lady.  When DD#1 was in soccer, (7 years old btw)  one of the kids on the other team kicked a ball very very very hard and at a very very close distance right into the stomach of another little girl on our team.  The father of this boy yelled out "kick that ball in her stomach again" I kid you not.  Mama tiger came out in me and I am lucky it didnt result in fistacuffs!

  • I played basketball in highschool and you do get bumped around alot! ( i had the wind knocked out of me all the time, fingers jammed, bruises that looked like tennis shoes and handprints and stitches) it is a very hands on physcial sport (that they call non-contact) Were you sitting next to the woman that was yelling? if you were yelling across the court then i would think you just like to argue. let the refs handle it. She can yell all she wants and the daughter is going to be aggressive no matter if the mom is saying it outloud.

Our couch always yelled at us when we weren't playing well. I still remember a parent from the other team getting on to him, telling him not to yell at us, that we were just girls. I always hated that

  • I'm probably going to be one of those moms that disagrees with unnecessary roughness. While some contact is part of the game, deliberate roughness isn't supposed to be. And I'd calmly mention to the other mom that technical fouls are also part of the game.

I hate seeing parents get so heated and aggressive over sports; it also shows a lack of compassion. Those attitudes of "that's just the way it is" are also why we have a bullying problem in our schools. So many parents don't see their kids' behavior as a problem.  (I'm not equating aggressive game play with bullying; just saying the attitude carries over).

I played in high school as well, and understand that all sports have some degree of roughness, but throwing elbows around intentionally and nailing someone in the head isn't part of the game. Pivot your feet and get rid of the ball.

I was sitting in front of her on the bleachers. I moved down a couple rows, so she spoke up and made sure I could hear her complaining 10 minutes after the play was over.

This will be me as well. DH said maybe you just need to coach Caroline, so we don't have to sit on the sidelines and hear stupid comments.

thats not a bad idea ya know ;-) If you have the time, it would be wonderful for the kids to have someone to teach them how to play the game AND be respectful to others ~ but you will still hear stupid comments from the parents

  • This gives me anxiety just thinking about it. I already get the mama bear feeling/reaction when I see things happen to my students. I can only imagine how I'm going to react when it's my own kid.
