Trouble loading syringe...Am I doing something wrong?

I'm a little worried I'm not getting all the meds in the needle. Everytime I load the needle and push up to get bubbles out and stuff, I always feel like I have 3-4 drips of meds come out and I don't know how to not have that happen. I use the Q-cap to help, but it's annoying, those little drips probably cost about 50 bucks a drip! lol..So i'm worried my response has been slow because I'm loosing a tiny bit of meds each time..likely???Any Advice???

Re: Trouble loading syringe...Am I doing something wrong?

  • What are you loading? I'm assuming menopur or something else you have to mix? In any case, it's the same. Pull up the meds into the syringe. Then pull up a little extra air (this makes sure you have all the meds in the actual syringe and gives you some space to play). Then flick the syringe while holding it with the needle side up. You may only need to flick it once or you may need to flick it several times. This will cause air bubbles to move to the top of the syringe. Then depress the plunger slowly until one drop come out the end of the needle.

I seriously doubt 3-4 drops will affect your response but I totally feel you in wanted to get every last drop!

  • Loading the player...
  • I hear ya. It's liquid gold!

Are you pulling the plunger back to the required dose on your syringe before putting the needle/cap it into the vial to draw? You have to push the same amount of air into the vial before pulling the actual meds out. If not, I can imagine it would be difficult to get the right dose out and drips everywhere from pressure.

  • I'm basically doing what you are saying.. I have to mix my menapur and folistim with 1/2 cc of sodium chloride...So I use the folistim pen, dial to 225 and push it into the powder vial of menapur. Then I add the 1/2 cc of sodium chloride to that..Then I use the q-cap to draw it all into the needle and I have air in it to ensure I've pulled everything in. I take the q-cap off and twist on the needle...then I flick it a few times, and once I start to push up, I always feel like I am loosing 3-4 drops of meds before I can get it all up in the resovoir. It's annoying, and expecially after my report yesterday that I'm not responding as quickly as they usualy see for a 28 year, I got to thinking those little drops every night add up! When we did it at the office together, I dont recall her loosing so much.. I'm about to add an extra notch of folistim to cover what I'm loosing! lol

  • Hmmm. How quickly are you pushing the Follistim and sodium chloride into the vial of Menopur? If you go too quickly it can make bubbles which could cause it. If you're really concerned about it you could try them as separate shots. Ask your RE about it first of course. I had to split mine (Follistim at night, Menopur in the morning). I never had problems with it.

When you have everything in the syringe and you look at it do you see air bubbles?

  • I really don't get bubbles too badly...I pull the meds into the syringe and pull extra than I need so there is Air/Space between the meds and the resovoir that attaches to the needle...And the funny part is I use the Q-cap to do this, so I put the needle on after the meds are loaded, so the fact that somehow a few drips of meds get up into the neeedle is baffling to me....I slowly start to push up and force the meds to the top, and before the meds are even touching the resovior I'm loosing little drips...I dont know if there's a suction thing going on or what...but It annoying. lol

    This!

You're probably doing subcutaneous injects, so you don't have to get every little bit of air out. A tiny teeny bit of air won't cause any problems (like 0.05 cc). Good luck with your next shot!

  • On almost all injectable meds they put a little extra in the bottle to allow for spillage. Ive worked in the medical field for years and this has always been my expierence, even with controlled drugs. When I would give my shot and pull out the needle a drop or two would run out of my stomach, the RE said it was fine as long as your getting the mass majority of it. Even knowing what I know I still freaked out about those little drops. Im sure your fine. Try no to push the plunger up to fast or pull extra air in to get liquid out of the needle or hub then push the plunger up. Hope this help, good luck.

  • After reading your Q in the check in, I think you are talking about Menopur.  I had the same issue.  A few drops would come out when my DH was trying to get the air bubble out.

In my experience, when he injected the air bubble it made the injection site burn for several hours afterward.  A few drops lost is okay and I personally prefer that to the awful burning.

We had a successful ER and ET with injecting the Menopur this way.

    Good luck!

Thats good to know! And yes, I'm mixing my menapur and folistim with 1/2cc of sodium chloride, and I'm always loosing a few drips trying to push the air out..and my IVF coordinator had made mention of how concentrated the doses were so I thought Holy cow, I'm loosing meds.. Especially after my not so great first monitoring appointment. So here's hoping I"m doing everything correctly!  Thanks for the insight!
