Parenting after a Loss

Decreased Appetite

Not sure if I am overreacting, but the past week and a half to two weeks DD hasn't been eating as much. She gets formula and breastmilk. The formula we use is Enfamil Newborn, and I talked to her babysitter, and she said she also has noticed she isn't eating as much. I have also noticed that she is a little more difficult to feed, espeically with the formula. She moves the bottle out of her mouth with her tounge or tries to bat it away with her hand. She used to finish a 4oz bottle no problem, but now it is a struggle getting her to finish it. She has been taking the Enfamil Newborn since she was about a week old.

However, at night when she wakes up to eat she takes the bottle (formula) no problem. I'm not sure if I should take her to the pedi, change her formula, change bottle, or what to do or if this is even something I should be worried about. She seems happy, and has gained almost 2 pounds since her last appointment back in December.

Re: Decreased Appetite

  • I wouldn't worry too much.  My DS seems to eat like a mad man during a growth spurt and then kind of chills out in between.  Babies know what they need, and their needs do change over time.

  • I agree with PP, babies go through so many fluctuations with feedings that I wouldn't worry about it.  If you see that there is a change in mood (more fussiness), spitting up, or a change in poop then you may want to contact your doctor.  Also, I wouldn't push finishing a feeding.  If your baby is showing signs of being finished at a particular feeding then it's best not to make them finish the bottle.  That could increase spit up, fussiness as well... Good luck!

  • Keep track of wet diapers.  As long as she has enough wet diapers in a day, I would not worry.  GL

  • Thanks ladies, she still acts hungry even when she pushes the bottle away which is why we keep offering it to her, she will eat a little bit more and then push it away again, and we go back and forth for a few minutes before we just stop trying.

I would say she has at least 5 wet diapers a day, and one dirty diaper, which is normal for her, and the pedi said was fine since I asked about it at our last appointment.

  • I'm so glad you asked this question. My LO is doing the same thing. He went from eating about 33oz a day back down to 28oz a day.He seems to play with his bottle after eating about 4oz. I can normally get another oz or two into him but going from 7+oz a feeding to 5oz made me a little nervous. He seems to be doing fine in all other areas so I will just wait until his next appt at the end of the month to ask the pedi.
