Natural Birth

Cost of med-free hospital birth?

Hello ladies;

 I've been looking into my insurance coverage for pregnancy and L&D.  I was wondering what those of you that have already had NBs in a hospital spent (before insurance coverage)?  I know costs will be cheaper without an epi, but I wasn't sure how much.  We're trying to make sure we have enough savings.

 Thanks!

ETA: I do know my co-insurance is 80% after meeting my $2k deductible so I am really just trying to get a feel.  I understand every area is going to be different.

  • This is very likely to be location (and even hospital) specific. I'd find someone in billing where you plan to deliver to talk to.

    Absolutely.  Inquire within at the hospital you plan to deliver.

  • $16,500.  I paid a 250 copay.

    My sister was charged 7k for the epi her first time in 2007.  She also only paid a copay like I did.

  • Mine would have been the same regardless if I had an epi or not. They would have covered it at 100% after my $150 deductible.

    Ours came out to be 14K for L&D, we had to pay $1,500.

    About the same cost for me, insurance covered everything.

  • This definitely depends on quite a few factors that we won't be able to predict for you. With our insurance it's covered at 100% and here in the midwest it's cheaper than pretty much everywhere else.

  • I think I remember ours coming in around 13k. We paid a 200 copay.

  • I'm in rural Texas and my total was around 13K for just me. Then another 4K for the baby's stay. My insurance paid 80%.

  • We paid almost $3k out of pocket, which is significantly more than a friend of mine who got an epi paid...so...

    Maybe ask friends/coworkers who have the same insurance that you do what they paid.

  • All hospitals bill differently. The first hospital I was going to deliver at charges for each individual item. Now we're at a different hospital and it's pretty much a flat charge for a delivery, everything is included. You're either vaginal or c/s and that's the only difference. The other one scans and bills for each individual item. So, a pack of diapers, a nasal aspirator, each pill you get, etc... will have a charge. The 2nd one doesn't do that. You can call your hospital and ask them. But honestly I wouldn't worry too much. Hospitals want your money but they'll bill you after the fact and you can set up payments once you get the bill, interest free of course.
