Convertible Car Seats

I have zero experience with convertible car seats, so I'm trying to do as much homework as I can before we order one. Right now I am really wanting a Recaro ProRide, just based on initial gut reaction. Unfortunately, I have a Honda Accord, so I'm worried that getting DS in and out of a RF convertible is going to be tricky, especially the ProRide since it sits up high from the reviews I have read. If you're using a convertible, do you ever put the seat in the middle of the backseat? Or if your convertible is behind the driver, do you ever climb in the passenger side and put LO in that way?

Re: Convertible Car Seats

  • Have you or your SO taken measurements of the back seat area and compared to the carseat?

That will be the most efficient way to know vs. Guessing. And yes, always center seat : hope it works out for ya.

  • I have a 2002 Honda Accord and a Britax Marathon installed behind the passenger seat. The seat was initially installed in the middle, but that meant there was no room for my teenage stepson to sit in the backseat. We needed the legroom for the driver's seat, so behind the passenger seat it went. I have occasionally loaded DS into the car from the driver's side, and it is sort of awkward, but not bad. It's easier just to load him on the passenger side, but as he's getting bigger I'm having to make extra sure I don't smack his head against the door frame.
  • I have the Recaro for both my kids (almost 3 year old and 8 month old).  I love it and so do they.  Its safety rating is very high.

When it was just my first child, she was in the middle rear-facing, which is considered the safest position for a car seat.  Now that we have 2 kids, the middle is not an option anymore.

  • I went ahead and ordered a Recaro on Amazon since I can return it for free.

I had read that the Accord doesn't have LATCH for the middle seat. I will have to research this more.

  • Most cars don't have LATCH in the center.  LATCH isn't safer than using a seatbelt; it's just way easier to install correctly which means safer.  Very few vehicles will allow you to install across the two side LATCH to put the seat in the middle via LATCH

My friend had the Recaro  and really likes it.

I tried the Recaro and Marathon in my Camry and was surprised that due to the height of the Recaro, it actually hit the drivers seat when rear facing but the marathon didn't.  Recaro takes up a few more inches back to front than the Marathon

Tip Buy Buy Baby and Babies R Us let you try out the carseats.  BBB sent a guy out to install them for us :)

  • We have a 2011 Accord sedan and a Graco Myride 65 (which is known for being huge). It fits RF just fine behind the driver's seat.

  • I drive a 2004 Honda accord. I have 2 Diono Radian convertible carseats installed plus a booster. It all fiits and the radian is actually pretty easy to get both kids in and out of.  I have the 2 carseats next to each other. One is secured with the seatbelt and the other with LATCH.

  • I have a truefit. It's an OK seat. I like that I can take a headrest part of while rear facing until she gets to a certain height. Makes it easier to fit it in without having to move my seat up. You can still put the seat in the middle. I have my daughter behind the driver's seat just because I have two carseats in my car. I just stand outside the car and buckle/unbuckle her there while standing in the doorway.
