I was reading "What to except 1st year" while pumping today and the chapter begin with the topic os bottle weaning. Have you guys begun this? If so, how, what does your day look like?
Now LO nurses and eats solids at 7-7:30 am (when he awakes)
10 am 6 oz bottle
1pm solid
4 pm nurse/ but it is a short nurse. 6 to 8 minutes total including both sides
6 pm dinner solids
7:30 8 oz prior to bed.
Does bottle weaning mean I should be putting the BM in a sippy cup? I am confused. TIA
Re: Bottle weaning
That's what we did. Starting at 11 months we starting offering formula (and then WCM) in sippy cups. At first they would only drink an ounce or two (then we would dump the rest into their bottles and finish the feeding) and over the course of a week or two they got better at it. Around 11.5 months we stopped offering bottles at all and shortly after we put all of the bottles away. Now they get sippy cups exclusively at home and daycare, and we're pushing my mom and MIL to stop with the bottles when we go to their houses but they're stubborn and we're there so infrequently that we haven't pushed the issue.
Jen, do they hold the sippy cups themselves? I am giving Nat sips of water in her sippy cup right now and I still need to hold it for her. If I let her hold it, she just ends up chewing on the edge, bottom or handles.
Yes, they hold it on their own. The sippy cup has been a long process for us. We introduced it months ago and early on they would stare at it or play with it. We did it early because I wanted to try making it a gradual thing rather then switching cold turkey (which is a perfectly fine way of doing it, we just wanted to try to do it over time) and it's worked well for us. Sometimes when they're lazy we still hold them, and honestly when it's bedtime and we're cuddling I don't mind. But I won't hold it for them in their highchairs anymore. If they want a drink, they hold it. To get back at me for my stubborness they tend to throw them at me when they're done
When do you offer it to her? Have you tried just having a sippy cup of water available whenever so that she can take sips of water here and there? We let them get really good at drinking water out of it before we tried formula/milk. You can also try offering it right after giving her dry foods (like maybe after she's had a bunch of Cheerios) so that she's thirsty and makes more of an effort to drink.
I've sort of started the process- but my guy has always been pretty easy going about what he'll drink out of.
We started offering him a sippy cup with water at meals around probably 8 months, maybe a little earlier. He didn't quite get tipping it back for a while, but caught on a couple of weeks ago. So now offer him BM in the sippy cup with dinner, and I just started sending him his lunch BM in a sippy to daycare.
We still nurse once in the morning, before bed, and once in the motn- oh and during the day on weekends. My plan is to start the sippy cups now when BM is paired with a meal. Then when I wean at 1 year we'll cut the bottle out.
