Why are my dishes breaking?

In the past month, I have found about three of my dishes with giant cracks in them. They aren't old. About 5 years? They don't get dropped or mistreated. The kids use plastic.

How long have you had your dishes? Or what's the lifespan on dishes? (Plates, bowls, saucers)

  • Is it stoneware? We have the red, square ones that are stoneware from Target and they cannot be put in the microwave or they will get brittle and crack.

  • No- it saws bone china? I sometimes put them in the microwave. Maybe the dishwasher?

  • I have regular 8 piece place setting, including 6 serving bowls, a platter AND a teapot set and tea cups. (ceramic?)

I have had them for about 7 years, and have chipped 1, and broken 3. Sad! Especially since they are irreplaceable!

Anyway... Depending on what yours are made of can be why they are breaking.

  • we got ours for our wedding, so about five years ago. Since we got granite counters every one of them has gotten chipped. They were in such good condition before that. :(

  • Our plates are like that too. I just don't think things are as well made as they used to be.

I have heard about a ton of people breaking/chipping/cracking dishes on granite counter top.  Because it is such a hard material you are supposed to set things down gentler than other types of counter top because it does not absob shock well.

And I agree with a pp, things just are not made as well as they used to. I have the dishes I grew up eating on from around the age of 15, if not a little before that, so my dishes are at least 20 years old.

Could be the microwave and heated dry in the dishwasher weakening them over time.

  • We've been using ours for about 5 years and we just recently chipped two and broke one.  Ours have been because we have a ceramic/porcelain sink, and they get banged into it and chip.  But we did so well for so long; it was seriously just in the past 6 weeks that all of these accidents have happened!

My whole life of crappy counters has trained me otherwise. I have to try to be more mindful, which isn't always easy when there is a toddler in the house. Oh well, i'll get a new set for company.

You might be surprised what's replaceable ;)

I have no idea why the dishes are cracking, though.

  • Augie has dropped and broken two in the past few months.  We set them down to let the dog lick them and if we're not quick enough  Augie gets to them!

We have pfaltzgraph from kohls and I'm very happy with them.  But they do break when you drop them so maybe Corell would be better?  I think Corell has a lifetime guarantee.  .
